Culture Editor, Jezebel

New York

Gizmodo Media Group (GMG), which is part of Univision's digital arm, Fusion Media Group, is seeking an experienced culture editor to cover pop culture for its women’s politics and culture site, Jezebel, which reaches some 14 million unique monthly readers globally.

About the Company:

Gizmodo Media Group is the publisher of the web’s most original and fearless media brands, including Gizmodo, Earther, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Jezebel, Deadspin, Splinter, Jalopnik, TrackRecord and The Root.  As part of Fusion Media Group, we reach an audience of +120 million visitors a month—more than one-third of all Americans.

About the Role:

The culture editor will be tasked with refocusing The Muse, Jezebel's culture subsite, within a robust trinity of film, TV, and music. The ideal applicant will be capable of identifying and assigning several quick stories per day advancing or reacting to entertainment news, but also envisioning larger packages and in-depth features that push forward the conversation on pop culture. They will have purposeful ideas about expanding coverage in a way that aligns with the Jezebel eye and its readership.

This is a position for an experienced, sharp editor with an encyclopedic expertise in pop culture, in all of its forms: celebrity news, music, TV, film, books, and more. The ideal candidate will have a history of ideating ambitious stories about powerful figures, complex issues, and expansive topics, including a track record of prioritizing gender issues long before the current #MeToo moment. This editor won't be afraid of reporting that disrupts the traditional celebrity narrative and exposes the Hollywood machinery, particularly surrounding issues of abuse, the wage gap, and all the various leads we get about systemic suppression of various genders. Strong organizational skills, a clear and ambitious vision, and a sense of humor are all requisites.

The ideal candidate will:

  • have at least five years’ experience editing and assigning pop culture stories for a newspaper, alt-weekly, or fast-paced online publication;
  • be comfortable managing a team of writers, and come to the position with their own stable of freelancers;
  • have experience working across mediums, including video and podcasts, and come with ideas about how to expand them;
  • be capable of turning around stories ranging from aggregated news to investigative features at a quick and steady pace;
  • be familiar with the Jezebel voice and audience;
  • be ready to work in an extremely collaborative environment;
  • have strategic ideas about how to expand on Jezebel’s pop culture coverage;
  • be able to articulate and report on a landscape of gender—including non-binary identities—not just "women's issues."
The culture editor will report to the editor-in-chief.
This position is in the WGA-E bargaining unit.
