What does our Operations Team do?

Kinja platform is our collaborative publishing system that is running the web’s most original media brands - amongst them Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Kotaku, The Onion, The AV Club, Clickhole and others - that combined reach 100MM unique visitors a month -- about one third of all Americans. Behind the scenes the Operations Team takes care of our high-traffic AWS-based infrastructure to provide an uninterrupted experience for our readers. The Database Administrator, as a key member of this five-person team, makes sure all the database engines are performing to its capabilities.


Come join the Operations Team as a DBA, and help us to:

  • minimise database downtime and provide fast query responses
  • monitor database performance, implement changes
  • assist the developer team in database-related tasks
  • manage backups and recovery procedures
  • troubleshoot and resolve database problems
  • implement and support our AWS based infrastructure
  • work on the implementation phase of new and existing products

Relevant Skills

  • deep knowledge of MySQL databases, including replication, performance
  • query optimization
  • experience with Cloud computing (particularly AWS)
  • ability to detect causes of instability
  • solid scripting skills in UNIX shell and Python
  • using such tools confidently like: Jenkins, git


Our team would be impressed by

  • familiarity with Aurora RDS
  • working with container-based infrastructure: Docker, Kubernetes
  • experience with Infrastructure as Code (eg. Cloudformation)
  • familiarity with deploying and configuring JVM based applications
  • strong Linux system-level skills
  • a constant learner mindset
