Freelance Weekend Writer/Editor, The Root


The Root, Gizmodo Media Group's leading site for African American news, culture and opinion, is looking for a freelance weekend writer/editor.

About the Role:

We are looking for a sharp writer with a strong voice, good jokes, and a keen eye for great stories. We want you to be able to quickly write clean, accurate news stories, find unique angles on the big narratives of the day, and craft original critiques on race, breaking news, entertainment and black culture that will speak to The Root’s dedicated audience. If you have a passion for news around race and culture and want to write the stories no one else is telling, we want to hear from you.

The shifts for the position include Saturdays and Sundays. Because you’ll be the sole editorial contributor during the weekend, you’ll need to be a self-starter, well organized, with strong self-editing skills and comfortable self-publishing. You should also be adept at writing social copy to promote your stories across The Root's social networks.

You should have:
  • 3+ years of online writing and reporting experience, preferably in the worlds of race, culture, breaking news or entertainment.
  • A clear, authoritative writing voice and strong copyediting skills
  • Strong headline-writing abilities and an eye for unique angles on the news
  • The ability to work well independently
