Staff Writer/Entertainment, The Root

The Root, Gizmodo Media Group's leading site for African American news, culture, and opinion, is looking for a staff writer specializing in entertainment and social media coverage for our blog, The Grapevine.

About the Company:

Gizmodo Media Group is the publisher of the web’s most original and fearless media brands, including Gizmodo, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Jezebel, Deadspin, Splinter, Jalopnik, and The Root.  As part of Fusion Media Group, we reach an audience of +120 million visitors a month—more than one-third of all Americans.

About the Role:

Are you obsessed with entertainment—from Bey and Jay to the latest film release? Are you a follower of so-called “Black Twitter?” Or, better yet, an active participant in the vibrant social media community African Americans have carved out for themselves digitally? Are you a strong writer with a unique voice? We’re looking for you! The Root wants a dynamic entertainment writer who has lots of opinions, a great sense of humor, and a keen eye for hot stories. Interest in doing on-camera video work along with this role is a plus!

For this role, we need you to be able to quickly write clean, accurate entertainment stories, find unique angles on the big narratives of the day, and craft original critiques on social media, music, film, television, celebrity, the arts, culture, and more. This writer would be responsible for our blog, The Grapevine, which covers entertainment with a social media bent. You should also be adept at newsgathering and interviews—from the red carpet to your cell phone.

You should have:

  • 3+ years of online writing and reporting experience, preferably in the worlds of race, culture, or entertainment
  • A clear, authoritative writing voice and strong copy-editing skills
  • Strong headline-writing abilities and an eye for unique angles on the news
  • The ability to work well independently
