Deputy Editor, Kotaku

Gizmodo Media Group (GMG), which is part of Univision's digital arm, is seeking an experienced editor to serve as deputy editor of its video game news and opinion site, Kotaku, which reaches some 14.4 million monthly readers globally.

The Opportunity:

The Deputy Editor should be able to help lead Kotaku. Simple as that. The deputy will work closely with the editor-in-chief to shape the site’s future while keeping its present as vibrant and relevant as possible.  The ideal candidate will balance leading by example through their own work and editing and collaborating with Kotaku’s far-flung team of reporters, critics and producers. They will be ready to continue the site’s traditions but also challenge them, to work with our existing talent but also identify and spotlight new voices.


For this role, a love of gaming is a must. That means playing or being aware of a wide range of games that appeal to Kotaku’s broad readership and to potential readers we don’t yet reach. Equally important is a love of media, of bringing true stories and genuine critique to an audience of millions, satisfying readers and at times challenging them. The deputy should be driven to make Kotaku's front page as interesting as any on the internet on any given day. The Deputy Editor will work in Kotaku's offices in New York City.


As Deputy Editor, you should:

  • have experience managing writers;

  • be comfortable overseeing a growing staff of ~15 in day-to-day site operations, including assigning, editing, and publishing stories;

  • respond nimbly to cultural and news events in a unique voice;

  • have significant experience editing and writing for a fast-paced digital news outlet with a diverse audience;

  • know how to motivate a team;

  • work with the editor-in-chief in thinking big-picture about the site’s vision, challenge assumptions about what Kotaku is and help execute said vision across multiple platforms;

  • be organized and detail-oriented;

  • be ambitious about Kotaku’s growth in both output and audience.
