The Root, Gizmodo Media Group's leading site for African American news, culture, and opinion, is looking for a News Editor specializing in breaking news, politics and emerging social justice coverage for the site.

About the Role:

If you’re on a heavy diet of news, social justice, and politics, we’re looking for you to write and edit for our breaking news team at The Root. We’re looking for a dynamic editor who can also pitch in writing breaking news, who has lots of opinions, a great sense of humor, and a keen eye for hot stories.

For this role, we need you to be able to quickly write and edit clean, accurate news stories; find unique angles on the big narratives of the day to assign coverage for; and work with and edit multiple daily news writers covering breaking news, politics, and social justice. The news editor should be adept at crafting original critiques on a multitude of subjects affecting the African American community, be good at finding and researching stories, and coordinate daily news coverage on The Root among the news writers.

You should have:

  • 3+ years of online writing and reporting experience, preferably in the worlds of race, news, politics, or culture
  • A clear, authoritative writing voice and strong copy-editing skills
  • Strong headline-writing abilities and an eye for unique angles on the news
  • The ability to work well with a team
