Onion Writing Fellowship
The Onion Writing Fellowship is offered year-round in two six-month increments (January through June, and July through December). Our fellows must be based in our Chicago office and are paid a monthly stipend. It is an intensive and esteemed program that has produced the majority of our current writers and numerous former writers and editors. For the duration of a fellow’s six months with the staff, they participate in The Onion's entire editorial process and are treated essentially as a staff writer in terms of workload and the opportunity to write frequently across a wide range of content types. The publication of a fellow’s material is always contingent on quality.
There are two fellowship positions available this session.
Please include the following in your application packet:
- A resume and brief, one-paragraph cover letter touching on your experience and the diverse viewpoint you would bring to the position
Upload all of your writing samples in a single PDF attachment, separate from the resume and cover letter. The writing samples should include all of the following items:
- A list of exactly 25 Onion-style headlines (no copy, just headlines)
- Three (3) written-out News In Briefs (choose three headlines from your list of 25 and write them out in the traditional Onion NIB length and structure)
- Five (5) feature jokes for “Tips For Apartment Hunting” (submit five ideas similar in style to these sample jokes: “Set a price point that’s within your means, then set another for what you’re willing to fork over for a place that’s habitable,” and “Make sure your furniture will fit in the space by bringing your couch to every showing.”)
