Nights & Weekends Freelance Writer, Gizmodo
G/O Media is the publisher of the web’s most original media brands, including Gizmodo, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Deadspin, Jezebel, Jalopnik, The Root, The Onion and The A.V. Club, and reaches over 120 million unique visitors a month—more than one-third of all Americans. We connect with the young, diverse audiences that are shaping our future. Through fearless journalism, provoking comedy, and high-impact storytelling, we elevate the stories and issues our readers and viewers are passionate about.
About the role:
Gizmodo, our tech and science site, is seeking a freelance writer to help us cover the most pressing, interesting stories in technology and science during night and weekend shifts.
We are looking for a sharp writer with a strong voice, good jokes, and a keen eye for great technology stories. We want you to be able to quickly write clean, accurate news stories, find unique angles on the big narratives of the day, and craft original critiques on the tech world that will speak to Gizmodo’s dedicated audience. If you have a passion for technology and want to write the stories no one else is telling, we want to hear from you.
The shifts for the position include weekend days (10am to 6pm ET) and Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights (5pm to 12am ET). Because you’ll be the sole editorial contributor during the night shifts, you’ll need to be a self-starter, well organized, with strong self-editing skills. On the weekends, you’ll work alongside another Gizmodo writer, helping to expand our coverage on Saturdays and Sundays. This is a remote position.
You should have:
- 3+ years of online writing and reporting experience, preferably in the worlds of consumer technology, technology business, and technology culture
- A clear, authoritative writing voice and strong copyediting skills
- Strong headline-writing abilities and an eye for unique angles on the news
- The ability to work well independently and with a team
G/O Media is deeply committed to fostering a transparently inclusive workplace environment and people of color, women, people with disabilities and LGBTQ candidates are very strongly encouraged to apply. Our company-wide mission is to reach very diverse audiences and so, we are deeply committed to having teams and leaders that reflect this mission.
*This is a remote position in all U.S. time zones.
