About the Role:

G/O Media is currently looking for a Deputy Editor to help lead and grow Jalopnik, one of the internet’s most-read websites covering cars, automotive culture and transportation.

The ideal candidate is a strong editor with extensive editing and reporting experience and a deep understanding of Jalopnik’s unique editorial voice.  They must have interests in tech, culture, science and more, and be able to blend those things into Jalopnik’s already rigorous coverage of the world of cars. 

We are looking for someone who is equal parts car nerd and fearless journalist, who has a track record of leading a team in producing incisive daily output and ambitious features and investigative work.

As Deputy Editor, you should:

  • have experience managing writers
  • be comfortable overseeing a growing staff in day-to-day site operations, including assigning, editing, and publishing stories
  • respond nimbly to cultural and news events in a unique voice
  • have significant experience writing and editing for a fast-paced digital news outlet with a diverse audience
  • know how to motivate a team
  • assist the editor-in-chief in thinking big-picture about the site’s vision, and help execute said vision across multiple platforms
  • be organized and detail-oriented
  • be ambitious about Jalopnik's growth in both output and audience

 Qualifications:

  • Strong leadership skills with at least three years’ experience of managing a team of journalists in a fast-paced deadline-driven, digital environment

  • Experience in video, TV, podcasts and other platforms Jalopnik can expand into

  • First-rate editorial judgment and editorial skills

  • Ability to generate original ideas for creative and engaging content

  • Demonstrable interpersonal skills with the ability to manage, motivate and mentor a diverse and talented team of writers and editors

  • Strong collaborative skills, including experience of liaising with stakeholders across the company

This is a position covered under the collective bargaining agreement with the WGA-E.
