Staff Writer, Lifehacker (Personal Finance)

New York

G/O Media is the publisher of the web’s most original media brands, including Gizmodo, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Deadspin, Jezebel, Jalopnik, The Root, The Onion, and The A.V. Club, and reaches over 120 million unique visitors a month—more than one-third of all Americans.  We connect with the young, diverse audiences that are shaping our future. Through fearless journalism, provoking comedy, and high-impact storytelling, we elevate the stories and issues our readers and viewers are passionate about.

About the role

Do you have a black belt in salary negotiation? Are you in possession of more airline miles than everyone you know combined? Would your opinions on student loan payoff plans be considered “fascinating dinner party conversation”? Could you retire next year but would prefer instead to work in a very cool job explaining the finer points of personal finance to an audience of millions?

Lifehacker, G/O Media’s lifestyle site with 14 million monthly users, has an immediate opening for a  staff writer specializing in personal finance. This is a full-time position with competitive salary and good benefits, working out of G/O’s New York City mothership. You’ll pitch and write stories, star in videos, host segments for Lifehacker’s podcast, and bring our audience best-in-class service journalism.

This is a position for a quick-witted, strong-voiced writer who is excited to help other people live their best financial lives—but in a nerdy, numbers-focused sort of way, rather than as an Oprah mantra.

You should

  • Have at least 2 years of experience writing for a fast-paced online publication;
  • Be capable of turning around stories ranging from news blogs to longer features at a quick pace;
  • Be comfortable working across mediums, including video and podcasts;
  • Be eager to brainstorm about how to expand Lifehacker’s personal finance coverage, and to work in a fun, collaborative environment.

G/O Media is deeply committed to fostering a transparently inclusive workplace environment and people of color, women, people with disabilities, veterans, and LGBTQ candidates are very strongly encouraged to apply. Our company-wide mission is to reach very diverse audiences and so, we are deeply committed to having teams and leaders that reflect this mission.

This is a position covered under the collective bargaining agreement with the WGA-E.
