It looks like Jessica Drew is ditching the Spider-Spandex! For the first time since Spider-Woman made her début in 1977, the character is receiving a fabulous new costume redesign as part of her ongoing standalone series.

Spider-Woman's new costume - the first major design overhaul for the character since she was introduced in Marvel Spotlight #32 - will first appear today in Spider-Man Unlimited, the endless runner mobile game from Gameloft, before making its comic début in Spider-Woman #5 in March of next year. According to the comic's current editor, Nick Lowe, the redesign will mark a tone change for the series that will see Drew return to a more 'street-level' approach to crime fighting:

Spider-Man isn't really a detective — he swings around looking for trouble, whereas Jess needs to go and figure stuff out and dig things up, and you can't really do that head to toe in spandex very well. To operate on the level she wants to, she needs something that can pass for semi-normal and she can turn it on to crazy if she needs to.

Check out another picture of the design below, as well a character sheet from artist Kris Anka showing off the leather jacket that is the core piece of costuming for the new look:

It's nice to see another superhero borrow from the Batgirl school of practical design, something we adore, but still keeping some nods to the original suit, like the smaller webbing under her arms. It's also especially interesting to see such a radical change from the spandex of the previous costume, considering the controversy the character faced over the summer with Milo Manara's variant cover (Lowe was very quick to point out that the redesign was already in progress when that happened, and not a response to it).

What do you think? Will you miss the spandex suit that's come to define Spider-Woman, or are you excited about her new look?
