This year, the most amazing thing I saw at Google’s annual developer conference wasn’t a phone, a tablet, or even a head-mounted display. It was a 360-degree 3D video that took me to Japan. Now, filmmakers can spend $15,000 on the tech that made it possible: the GoPro Odyssey. It’s one heck of a camera.
This is a “what if” scenario. I have no proof. But I think it’s pretty damn likely that GoPro is building a virtual reality camera. A GoPro that captures your adventures in 360 degrees—and lets people experience them as if they were right there with you.
I think that 360-degree video is going to be a big deal. Apparently, Mark Zuckerberg agrees! He just announced that Facebook will be able to embed spherical videos right in your News Feed, much like YouTube 360.
Look out YouTube fans: soon, you'll be able to immerse yourself in videos that go all the way around. Google has just confirmed to Gizmodo that it will be adding native support for 360-degree videos to its streaming video service.
