Cchance, seriously.. the drooled over scroll wheel was the thing I liked the least about my iPod (before it got stolen). I want a tactile "up/down" option so I don't need to look at the screen while performing every function.
Also, I never realized you were supposed to use your thumb for the scroll wheel. I thought you were supposed to operate it by moving your index and middle fingers in a circular motion while trying like hell to insert your pinky finger in the dock connector!

I used to work at NASA and the technique used to do this is very common, it's called 2D cross correlation (see: Wikipedia). It's a fourier-based i.e., frequency domain, technique and used in particle image velocimetry (see: Wikipedia) among other things.
Basically, you apply a 2D fourier transformation to both images, which captures the periodic characteristics of the image, and then rotate one of the matrices by 90 degrees and multiply the two. This is called a convolution in the frequency domain (I think....). You find the peak in each image, there should be one strong peak and two symmetric secondary peaks, and vector to the origin is exactly the displacement vector between the two images.
There are ways to get a sub-pixel accuracy because the shape of the peaks are well known (Airy functions, I think) and you can fit the peaks to a 2D 2rd order polynomial to find the location of the peak within a pixel to within 1/10th of a pixel.
