Regardless of what you think of Inception’s ambiguous ending, if the film were released in 2017, it’s safe to assume that the final scene with the spinning top would have played out a bit differently—with a much, much more fitting and distracting reveal.
By now, we’ve all seen that last, gut-wrenching scene of Christopher Nolan’s Inception: Dominick Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), exhausted and unsure of whether he’s still trapped within a dream, pulls out his totem one last time to check—before deciding that he doesn’t care and would rather be with his children regardless. Seven years later, there’s still a lively conversation among hardcore Inception fans about whether Cobb was actually in a dream and if the spinning top totem he uses was actually his or his dead wife’s.
I won’t give away the ending to comedian Edward Usher’s masterful recreation of that last Inception scene, but suffice it to say that it’ll leave you wondering whether anything that’s happened this year has been real or just a waking nightmare. Within a nightmare. *CUE INCEPTION NOISES*
