Tom Cruise is about to go full Brendan Fraser. According to Variety, the iconic actor is in talks to star in the brand new Universal reboot of The Mummy, which sets up a new connected Monsters universe.
Cruise is one of those major stars who really can do anything he wants, so choosing to join The Mummy just feels odd. But after his scheduled opened up, he’s now in talks to go along for the ride.
Directed by Alex Kurtzman, produced by Chris Morgan and written by Jon Spaiths, The Mummy is scheduled to open March 24, 2017. It’s set in present day, unlike the most recent iterations, and is rumored to star some type of military man who gets wrapped up, pun intended, with the mythic monster. From there, the characters are expected to appear in other movies in the franchise that will include characters like The Wolfman, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and Creature from the Black Lagoon.
There’s no word on exactly what role Cruise would play, but he’s expected to play some kind of role in the larger universe, both in front of and behind the camera.
Earlier this week, we’d heard Universal was aiming high for this franchise with Angelina Jolie at the top of the Bride of Frankenstein wish list. Casting Cruise is just as big a coup for them, and automatically makes this franchise a huge player.
The actor is currently shooting the sequel to Jack Reacher and is expected to make The Mummy next, before a 6th Mission: Impossible.
