Watch a Russian submarine launch supersonic cruise missiles in the air

Here is footage showing a Russian Navy submarine attacking ISIS positions in Raqqa, Syria by launching missiles from the submarine itself. The Kalibr cruise missiles were launched from the Rostov-on-Don submarine, a Kilo-class diesel electric submarine, in the Mediterranean. It’s the first time Russia had launched strikes in Syria from a submarine in the Mediterranean.

The missiles reportedly targeted two major terrorist positions in Raqqa, a stronghold of the Islamic State.

DISCUSSION

Was this more of an arms marketing / military PR thing? or was it really more cost effective / strategically important to use expensive sub-launched cruise missiles instead of cheap dumb bombs via their very nearby airbases? I mean they’re just targeting mud huts and pickup trucks, right?
