Video: BlackBerry 9000 vs. Curve and Pearl Plus Full OS Tour (Smoothest BlackBerry Ever)

Crackberry follows up their rave review of the pre-distro Blackberry 9000 they snagged off eBay with a full video tour that compares it to the Curve and Pearl before diving into the OS for the most in-depth look yet. If you've been staring at BlackBerries for years, it looks like the new UI will feel pretty refreshing, since all of the apps benefit too, not just the home screen. And menus have transparencies! Plus YouTube support (vid opens in BlackBerry media player, but it's there). Must watch if you're at all interested in the 9000. [Crackberry]

  • I'm never buying another NIKON product.

  • This phone reminds me of the iPhone!

(the same way Brittney Spears reminds me of Kate Beckinsale)

  • I dunno. This kind of smacks the iPhone in the face for me.

I might drop my iPhone for the Blackberry 9000 and return back to that good old QWERTY keyboard again.

And just get a iPod Touch.

Let's see if the 3G iPhone can win me back.

This is one of the nicest BB's I've ever seen. If I were to get a smartphone, this would be a pretty strong consideration, well above any WinMo device I've seen.

  • @hat39: Dude, Where's My Nikon?

  • Wow! What an underwhelming piece of UI.

Apple is going to bust that crackhouse wide open. There's a new sheriff in town!

  • Are they trying to imitate the Sony XMB? The first part looks a lot like the PS3, including the background image.

  • I really like everything about this device except for the trackball on the web browser... come on man! That's gonna get really annoying really fast.

  • I would get this over the current iPhone. I might very well change my mind over the soon to be released iPhone though. I use email so much on my smartphone and after using others' iPhones it just wasn't as easy as on a full QWERTY BB.

  • The Blackberry is now #2 on my list. I was a long-time Blackberry user for many years... but I now own and prefer the iPhone.

  • I sure do miss the push email on my BB. We'll see how the Activesync thing works with iPhone. If it's ok, I keep it. If not, this bad boy could be my next phone.

  • Hmm, many of the features he showed off on the 9000 with os 4.6 are already there in the betas for 4.5 for the pearl and curve. I have 4.5.0.18 on my BB 8100 and it can play youtube videos just like the 9000 does. 4.6 looks prettier though, and the 9000 does seem to be much, much faster than my old pearl.

  • Nice. Like it.

    Should dominate the corporate market.

  • Meh. Looks nice (minus size), but not very easy to use. I'm sure it is a step up for RIM devices, but iPhone is gonna kick the shit out of this thing. BTW, what kind of douche bag listens to Godsmack and Avril Lavigne, or buys a BB for that matter? Death from Above kicks ass, but I am confused as to why they would appear on the same device as the previously mentioned shit bands.

  • @justinpe: How can you say the new iphone is gunna kick the shit out of this thing if you havent seen it in action yet. You cant. Also, my dad works at a big office type place downtown and no, none of the people I have ever asked about the iphone have any interest in it at all. A touchscreen has no place in the business world so the iphone will never penetrate that market where blackberry is king. Also, you are the biggest fanboy ever.

  • @justinpe: He also had Hannah Montana on there. I noticed that he exited out of the music player pretty fast, as if he was embarrassed because he forgot he had those songs on the device..

  • @giislander:

Because the current iPhone looks easier to use than this thing and the new iPhone will have many of the same features as the 9000 (and possibly more). Plus the new iPhone will be smaller than the 9000 with a bigger screen. Just an opinion dude, no need to get all worked up and defensive.

Your dad works in a big office type place, and no one there has any interest in the iPhone? Well, then, I guess you're right. I'm gonna give Stevo a call and tell him to put the whole iPhone thing on hold since we have this new groundbreaking research to consider. Seriously though, you must have been offended by the Avril comment?

"A touch screen has no place in the business world"? Really? Weird that RIM would be developing a touchscreen BB when all of their customers are important business people who work at your dad's big office type place.

Finally, I would argue that the guy who paid $800+ for this thing and has a website called crackberry.com would be considered a bigger BB fanboy than me an Apple fanboy.

  • @ScotteusMaximus:

    Hannah Montana is cool.

  • jk

  • why the f dont they just develop a Blackberry Connect for the Iphone? I see a huge market there waiting to jump onto the Iphone, if it gets blackberry-like push capabilities.

  • @justinpe: But notice the querty TACTILE keyboard at the bottom of the phone.

  • @giislander:

"none of the people I have ever asked about the iphone have any interest in it at all....Also, you are the biggest fanboy ever."

    Heh, the irony.

  • @LagunaSol: For your info, I have an iphone, just saying that business people dont want it, thats all.

  • people, please forgive that idiot - he is so dazed with the iphone that he is beyond reasoning and fills his posts with suppositions.

activesync cannot smell bes unless u use microsoft's new device control server... uhhhh bes.

so there u have it folks.
    its a wrap!

but again i say that the iphone is the best consumer device out there. i wouldnt even put the BB second. because u never use more than 30% of what the device can do.

but its the winner on the enterprise and government level. and thats why they still use it.

  • oh and that 9000 will be my next work horse. yip, thar she blows!

for play i may get the i2phone.

    does 2x3G = 6G??

  • @giislander:

Kinda hard to notice a QWERTY keyboard that takes up half the real estate on the front of your phone. Also, RIM is developing a touch screen BB. Why would they do that if touch screens have no place in business?

I guess I never understood the whole tactile keyboard argument anyway. The size of the keyboard on Blackberries is the second most complained about feature on RIM devices, and many complain of mis-typing because the keys are too small. I could see how a virtual keyboard could be hard to use for a small percentage of people (big fingers and long fingernails), but these same people would also have a hard time typing on a Blackberry. Besides, I have found the landscape keyboard on the iPhone to be easier to use (except when driving, which shouldn't be done anyway) than any other keyboard on any other phone. I would like to see Apple apply the landscape keyboard to more of its apps, and I think they will. It looks like RIM improved the keyboard on the 9000, but they had to make some sacrifices in the process. Just look how big it is.

The 9000 is a very nice device with a lot of functionality, but I believe that more people will choose the iPhone over this device specifically (RIM will still more double or triple Apple in total market share).

The iPhone, as a single device, has captured over 9% of the market. I would like to see RIM say that about any one of their devices. So, yeah, that is basically what I meant when I said the iPhone was gonna kick the shit out of this thing.
