NordVPN Review 2026: Is it Good and Trustworthy?

By Florian Gray
Nordvpn Review
© Gizmodo.com

NordVPN is the VPN I first recommend for anyone looking for one. 13 years into covering this niche, that means something. I’ve watched ExpressVPN, PIA, and Proton VPN take turns on my PC, and none have stuck the way NordVPN has these last 18 months. It’s not flawless (the renewal pricing still stings, more on that below), but the combination of NordLynx speeds, a Threat Protection Pro layer that catches threats, and an audit trail running from 2018 to early 2026 is hard to beat.

NordVPN was built around 3 pillars: security, privacy, and performance. In 2026, it’s a full cybersecurity bundle. Malware and ad blocking are baked in, with an optional password manager (NordPass), 1 TB of encrypted storage with NordLocker, and an ID-theft monitoring tool (NordProtect, now Coveron) that surfaced 3 of my old breached accounts within the first hour of activation.

Our NordVPN review for 2026 doesn’t paper over the rough edges. There’s the renewal price shock, a desktop UI that’s gotten busy, and a Double VPN feature that’s harder to measure than the marketing pages let on. Here’s what 10 years of testing NordVPN (the last 30 days with the Prime plan) looked like.

4.8

NordVPN

NordVPN doesn't cut corners. While its complex UI and a higher renewal price may not be for everyone's budget, the VPN excels in all aspects: speed, privacy, advanced security, streaming, and compatibility. After testing dozens of different VPNs, NordVPN is still our #1 option.

Pros

  • Secure NordLynx protocol
  • Malware protection
  • Compatible with all devices
  • Double VPN for privacy
  • Over 211 VPN locations
  • Audited no-logging policy
  • Affordable biennial plans
  • The fastest VPN in our tests

Cons

  • Higher renewal cost
  • Complex UI for beginners

NordVPN Pricing: How Much Does It Cost?

Is NordVPN expensive? Short answer: No, not on the entry plan. Longer answer: It depends on whether you make it to the renewal. We bought our subscription (NordVPN Prime) for $6.99 per month, although the cheapest, Basic plan, is only $3.09 per month if you’d like to start on a budget. The price displayed on the homepage and the price at checkout matched, which isn’t always the case with VPN promo pages.

NordVPN promotions and coupons regularly drop the price to $2.99 around Black Friday, summer, and back-to-school. Across the year, the entry price floats between $2.99 and $3.39 per month for 2 years, often with 3 free months. The Plus plan sits at $3.59 to $3.99 per month, and that’s the one I’d point you to. Threat Protection Pro alone earns the extra dollar.

Nordvpn Price 2 Year
© NordVPN

The Prime and Complete tiers bundle in NordLocker (1 TB of encrypted storage) and NordProtect for ID theft monitoring. NordVPN also offers discounted annual plans, but the monthly cost is higher, and the free months usually disappear. The pure monthly plan is the priciest, and we’ve never seen a case where it makes financial sense unless you’re testing it for under 30 days.

↩️ Renewal: NordVPN’s Biggest Pricing Flaw

Everyone who’s been on NordVPN for 2 years has gotten that email, the one that bumps you to $8.29 per month if you don’t act. Our previous subscription was renewed at $7.99/month 2 years ago, before we caught it. Lesson learned: Set a calendar reminder 7 days before your term ends. Then, either let the support chat negotiate a returning-customer rate (we got a 35% renewal discount on a separate account) or cancel and re-subscribe on a fresh promo.

It’s also how the entire VPN industry is priced. NordVPN is worth the asking price and is one of the least expensive VPNs in 2026, even when compared to freemium VPNs like Windscribe, as shown in our NordVPN vs Windscribe review. Even at the renewal price, it’s still cheaper than ExpressVPN’s renewal, and the feature set is broader.

💳 Money-Back Guarantee, Free Trial, and Payment Methods

All plans carry a 30-day refund policy. We’ve used it 3 times across various test accounts since 2020, and the longest we’ve waited for the refund to hit a card was 5 working days (the fastest was 38 hours). The chat agent never asked for a reason past a single drop-down, and “I’m switching providers” was enough.

Nordvpn Refund Policy
© NordVPN

A full free version isn’t on offer. The 30-day refund is the closest thing to a NordVPN free trial if you plan to bail before day 30. Android users do get a real 3-day trial through the Play Store, useful for testing on a single device before committing.

4 payment methods cover the checkout: credit cards, Google Pay, PayPal, and crypto via CoinGate. Our crypto test (USDT on Tron, March 2026) went through in 11 minutes from QR scan to confirmation email. PayPal is the path I’d take for the refund. Credit card refunds clear faster on paper, but PayPal lets you dispute the charge if the support chat goes sideways.

NordVPN Review: User Experience Analysis

NordVPN’s apps look modern, but beginners walking in cold will pause at the side panel. 7 icons, and half of them are features you only get on Plus or above. The map view (default on desktop) is the part that takes acclimating: it looks great, but searching for “Norway” in a server list is faster than scrolling Europe on a globe.

Nordvpn German Ip App
© Gizmodo.com

Install times in our tests: 1 minute 30 seconds on Windows 11, 2 minutes 10 seconds on macOS Sonoma, and 45 seconds on a Galax S26 Ultra running Android 16. The macOS install will ask for system permission to add a VPN configuration. If you click “Don’t Allow” by reflex, you’ll need to grant it in System Settings → Network and relaunch the app. Once granted, NordVPN connects in about 1.8 seconds on average with NordLynx.

NordVPN’s speed lets you connect in 2 seconds and conceal your IP address. The mobile app looks the same, at least aesthetically. Mobile users get almost the same features as desktop users, including Threat Protection. On iOS, Threat Protection can’t scan downloaded files (Apple’s sandbox blocks it), which is worth knowing if you torrent on an iPad.

Battery drain on Android was a surprise. We measured 4% additional drain over a 12-hour day with NordLynx active, below what we got from ExpressVPN’s Lightway over the same period (about 6%). Both platforms have access to all of NordVPN’s protocols, which we’ll cover later in this NordVPN review 2026. The VPN allows 10 simultaneous connections, an industry standard in 2026.

Compatibility

The provider’s supported platforms and systems are long. The main ones:

  • Windows, macOS, and Linux computers and laptops
  • iOS and Android smartphones and tablets
  • Fire TV, tvOS, and Android TV systems (including Nvidia Shield TV)
  • Routers (Asus, pfSense, Tomato, DD-WRT, Netduma, …)
  • Gaming consoles like Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox
  • Firefox, Brave, Edge, and Chrome extensions

Its browser extensions are proxies, not full VPN tunnels. They cover Chrome or Firefox traffic only. Useful for streaming and CAPTCHA-light tasks, but if you’re torrenting in another app, you need the desktop app. They bring WebRTC leak protection and a clean location spoofer good enough to fool most geo-checks. For other browser-level options, see our favorite Chrome VPN extensions guide.

Is NordVPN Safe? NordVPN Security Features Tested

Yes, NordVPN is the safest VPN you can use in 2026, with 6 independent no-log audits and a feature stack that uses the privacy headroom. The hardest test we ran was a manual route-table check after force-killing the NordLynx process on Windows: the kill switch dropped network access in under 200ms, faster than CyberGhost in our test (around 600ms). Here’s what we put through the wringer.

🟢 Basic VPN Features

NordVPN’s basic features include:

  • 256-bit GCM + post-quantum encryption (ML-KEM). NordVPN was the first major consumer VPN to include post-quantum encryption across all NordLynx platforms (rollout completed in late 2024). The PQ layer wraps the standard ChaCha20 cipher and protects against “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks, where adversaries record your traffic today to break it once quantum computers mature.
  • Forward Secrecy. We confirmed this with a quick Wireshark capture on a controlled test rig: every new session negotiated fresh keys via the Diffie-Hellman exchange, and old sessions stayed unreadable when we deliberately tried to replay them. NordVPN’s documentation matches what we observed in the packet trace.
  • Kill Switch. We tested 3 failure modes: pulling out the Ethernet cable, killing NordVPN in the Task Manager, and putting the laptop to sleep, then waking it. All 3 triggered the kill switch within 200ms on Windows. The sleep/wake test is the one most VPNs fail. NordVPN passed. We explain how the kill switch works in detail in a separate guide.
  • Split tunneling. App-level only on Windows and Android, with no URL-level option; a small frustration if you want to exclude a single site from the tunnel. We routed our Slack desktop client outside the VPN during testing to avoid the workspace flagging us for “unusual location” logins, and it worked without a restart on Windows. On macOS, split tunneling is unavailable. Apple’s network architecture is the reason. ExpressVPN handles macOS split tunneling differently, worth knowing if that’s your main machine.

🔴 Advanced Security Features

Our NordVPN analysis runs through the advanced features that justify the Plus and Prime price uplift. We tested the service using the Prime plan, which includes all the core and bonus tools.

🖥️ Specialty Servers

Server numbers matter less than what the specialty servers actually do. NordVPN’s lineup:

  • Double VPN. Two encrypted hops through different countries. We measured the speed cost: on a UK to Switzerland Double VPN chain, our 342 Mbps line dropped to 256 Mbps download (25% drop), versus single-hop NordLynx losing only 5.3% on a UK direct connection.
  • Obfuscated Servers. They use OpenVPN TCP wrapped in an XOR-style obfuscation layer to disguise VPN traffic as regular HTTPS. We deployed these on a corporate network with deep packet inspection enabled, and they got through where plain NordLynx was blocked instantly. More on how they behaved in China below.
  • Onion Over VPN Servers. Available in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland. Adds a Tor hop after the VPN tunnel for layered anonymity. Slow (we never saw above 12 Mbps), but that’s Tor, not NordVPN. Useful when you want to go on the dark web safely without installing the Tor Browser separately. Most users won’t need this. If you do, you’ll know.
  • Dedicated IP servers. $4.19 per month add-on. Skips CAPTCHA, useful if you’re running a personal cloud or hitting bank login geo-locks. I’d skip it for general browsing, since a dedicated IP undoes part of the anonymity gain of a shared VPN pool.

⭐ Quick Update: NordVPN has removed dedicated P2P servers from its apps, but all of its servers are now P2P-ready, so torrenting functionalities are preserved.

🛡️ Threat Protection Pro

Threat Protection Pro is the feature that turns NordVPN from a VPN into a security suite. On iOS and Android, it’s branded as Threat Protection (without “Pro”), and the file-scanning piece is absent because Apple and Google’s sandboxes block it. The macOS and Windows versions get the full kit.

Nordvpn Threat Protection Pro App
© Gizmodo

You get three protection levels:

  • Anti-Malware
  • Advanced Browsing Protection
  • Ad and Tracker Blocker

The Anti-Malware piece scans downloaded files in real time and audits installed apps for known vulnerabilities. On day 3 of testing, it flagged our Telegram Desktop install (version 5.7.2 at the time) for a known CVE. We cross-checked it against Telegram’s own security disclosure page, and the alert was legitimate, tied to a media-rendering vulnerability patched in 5.8.1. After we updated, the warning cleared within the next scan cycle (around 2 hours).

We also hit one false positive worth mentioning: NordVPN’s Browsing Protection blocked an SEO research tool we use daily (not naming it here, but it’s a legitimate platform) as a “potentially deceptive site.” It took us about 10 minutes of toggling Threat Protection off and on to confirm it was the source. There’s no domain-level allowlist exposed to users, which is the one feature we’d add. Surfshark’s CleanWeb has a similar layer with manual exceptions, and it’s the right design.

Stay Safe Online With NordVPN

The Advanced Browsing Protection blocks phishing pages, scam landing pages, and malicious email links before they load. It caught two phishing pages in our spam folder (one fake DHL, one fake Coinbase login) and showed a clean blocked-site page instead. It worked even when the VPN tunnel was disabled, which is the right design, because malware doesn’t wait for a tunnel.

Nordvpn Threat Protection Activity
© Gizmodo

The Ad and Tracker Blocker blocks display ads and tracking scripts at the DNS level. We tested it on a few ad-heavy news sites and got faster page-load times (around 1.2 seconds shaved on average from a Wired article load) and zero pop-ups. On Android and iOS, NordVPN can also block adult sites, which parents will appreciate.

Nordvpn Threat Protection Advanced
© Gizmodo

NordVPN beats Norton VPN on this front by a wide margin. Norton’s antivirus shows through, but the VPN side is thin. NordVPN’s Threat Protection feels like Windows Defender baked into the VPN client, with the bonus that it travels with you on macOS, Android, and iOS too. The same outcome held in our NordVPN vs Bitdefender VPN duel, where NordVPN took the win on security depth and speed.

Threat Protection is in the Plus plan and above. The extra ~$1/month over Basic is the easiest upgrade call in the VPN space. It turns the product into a head-to-toe security tool. Skip it only if you already run a separate endpoint security suite.

🔰 NordLynx and NordWhisper VPN Protocols

NordLynx is a speed + security protocol. It’s built on WireGuard, but WireGuard alone has a known privacy weakness: it assigns static IPs to clients inside the tunnel, creating a linkable identifier. NordLynx solves that with a double-NAT system that strips identity from the inside-tunnel IP before traffic exits. The upshot is WireGuard speed without the WireGuard logging trade-off.

In practice, NordLynx connects in 1.8 seconds on average from a cold launch, and our speed tests below show how little it costs in throughput. It’s the protocol I leave on auto across all my installs.

Nordvpn Review Protocols
© Gizmodo

Alongside NordLynx, the provider includes 3 more protocols:

  • NordWhisper
  • OpenVPN TCP/UDP
  • IKEv2 (manual setup)

NordWhisper is the newest protocol NordVPN introduced to bypass network filtering. It tunnels VPN traffic inside what looks like ordinary HTTPS, the same trick obfuscated OpenVPN uses, but with WireGuard’s speed underneath. We tested it on a hotel network in Frankfurt that blocked NordLynx outright (likely DPI-based filtering on the captive portal): NordWhisper connected on the first try, with a 22% speed loss versus NordLynx on an unblocked network.

OpenVPN and IKEv2 are solid for compatibility and security, but slower than NordLynx. We measured 35-40% throughput loss on OpenVPN UDP versus NordLynx on the same UK server. OpenVPN TCP is what powers the Obfuscated servers for bypassing censorship. For deep technical detail, NordVPN’s own page on NordLynx is informative, rare for a marketing page.

🧐 Dark Web Monitor

We turned the Dark Web Monitor on with one of our long-running email addresses, the one we’ve used for tech newsletter sign-ups since 2014. Within 90 seconds, the scan returned 3 breach hits: LinkedIn 2012 (yes, that one), Gravatar, and a few others.

Nordvpn Dark Web Monitor
© Gizmodo.com

Each hit shows what was exposed (email only, hashed password, plaintext password, date of birth, etc.) and the source breach. You get a link to the affected service and have to log in yourself. We rotated two passwords before moving on.

🔁 NordVPN Meshnet Review

Meshnet rarely gets the spotlight it deserves. Strictly speaking, it’s not a privacy feature. It’s a peer-to-peer device network built on top of NordLynx’s encryption. You can link up to 10 devices and accept invites from up to 50 other users’ devices.

In a real-world test, my colleague in Berlin and I configured Meshnet to share a 2.3 GB client presentation file we’d been editing in parallel. Initial setup took about 6 minutes on the first device. Most of that was the email-based invite flow. On the second device, it took 90 seconds once Meshnet was already authorized in the account.

Nordvpn Meshnet
© Gizmodo

Transfer hit 41 MB/s peer-to-peer, peer-to-peer encrypted. The next morning, I was traveling and had forgotten the slides for an 8 am call, and Meshnet remote access pulled them in 12 seconds over hotel Wi-Fi.

The other Meshnet use case, routing traffic through a friend’s IP to access their country’s content, also works. We unblocked a German broadcaster’s geo-locked stream by routing through a teammate’s Berlin connection while sitting in Spain. Latency was about 60ms higher than a direct NordVPN German server, normal for an extra residential hop. Meshnet works on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.

💾 RAM-Only Servers

NordVPN runs its entire server fleet on RAM-only architecture. RAM servers wipe their data on every reboot, and nothing persists. Combined with the no-log policy, this means even a server seizure (which has happened to other VPN providers, including Mullvad in 2023) would yield nothing useful to an investigator.

NordVPN’s competitors mostly caught up here. The reason to still mention it: it’s the kind of infrastructure choice that’s expensive at scale and only profitable when the provider takes privacy as a real product feature, not a slogan.

🌐 Private DNS

NordVPN runs its own DNS resolvers instead of farming queries out to third parties. Why this matters: free DNS providers (even some paid ones) log query histories, negating a chunk of the privacy you’re paying a VPN for. NordVPN’s resolvers follow the same no-log policy as the VPN tunnels themselves. We verified the active DNS endpoint with a Wireshark capture, and the queries did route to NordVPN’s IP range, not our ISP’s resolver.

👤 NordProtect (Rebranded as Coveron; Prime plan only)

NordProtect is the ID-theft monitoring tool bundled into the Prime plan, restricted geographically to the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, and Switzerland. It’s a separate product technically (you can buy it standalone), but it makes much more financial sense as part of Prime.

Nordprotect App
© NordProtect

As of 2026, the standalone price drops to $8 per month on the 24-month plan. NordProtect scrapes data brokers (170+ in their network) and submits removal requests on your behalf. We ran it against one of our editorial identities and got removal confirmations from 47 brokers within the first 3 weeks. Most of the rest were pending or required verification. For more general identity coverage, see our best ID theft protection services guide.

NordVPN Review: IP and DNS Leak Test Results

This is the safety check that matters most. A VPN that leaks your real IP or DNS query when you think it’s hiding you is worse than no VPN at all, because it gives false confidence. Our NordVPN testing showed zero IP and DNS leaks across 20 country options. We ran the checks on a Windows 11 laptop and verified using two independent tools: ipleak.net and browserleaks.com.

Nordvpn Ip Leak Test 1 Update
© Gizmodo

The first tool (ipleak.net) showed our exit as the US server with US DNS, and no fragments of our UK IP slipped through, including the IPv6 check.

Nordvpn Ip Leak Test 2 Update
© Gizmodo

Browserleaks confirmed the same. We also ran a manual WebRTC check because the browser extension is where some VPNs trip up, and it stayed clean across Chrome, Firefox, and Brave.

Does NordVPN Keep Logs? No, and Here’s Why

Short answer: NO. The longer answer extends to jurisdiction, policy language, and audit history. NordVPN is headquartered in Panama, one of a handful of countries with no mandatory data retention law and no membership in the 5/9/14 Eyes intelligence-sharing alliances.  That’s the same reason ExpressVPN moved operations to the British Virgin Islands.

Jurisdiction matters because it determines what the government can compel a company to hand over. Nord Security (the parent company) is also a clean operator, in contrast with Gaditek (which owns PureVPN and famously cooperated with the FBI in 2017 after claiming no logs). We dug into that comparison in our NordVPN vs PureVPN piece. Jurisdiction is necessary but not sufficient. The policy and the audits do the rest.

📜 NordVPN’s Privacy Policy Review

We read the privacy policy end-to-end (it’s 18 pages in the current version, dated February 2026). The provider explicitly does not store:

  • IP address
  • DNS requests
  • Browsing history
  • Used bandwidth
  • Traffic logs

That list matches the no-log standard we expect from a privacy-grade VPN. Every VPN stores something to make the service function. For NordVPN, that’s last-session metadata used to enforce the 10-device limit, plus an anonymized connection flag (a boolean: have you used the VPN in the last 90 days?). The session metadata is overwritten with each new connection. The Boolean is the kind of data point that can’t, on its own, identify you.

Visit NordVPN’s Website

Nordvpn Privacy Policy
© NordVPN

The server load and aggregated diagnostic data are kept, but anonymized at the source. The Threat Protection Pro feature has its own carve-out in the policy, worth reading if you care, because it must scan URL hashes and file hashes to do its job. NordVPN states this scanning happens locally where possible, with anonymized backend checks where not.

Nordvpn Threat Protection Pro Policy
© NordVPN

So Threat Protection Pro processes more data than the bare VPN tunnel by design. The VPN doesn’t store that data directly. It’s either held briefly on the server in anonymized form or not stored at all. The way to verify this isn’t NordVPN’s word for it. It’s the audits.

✅ Third-Party Audits

A single audit is a snapshot. Six audits in a row, conducted by different firms over 8 years, is a pattern. NordVPN has been audited in 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2025, and February 2026, by PwC and Deloitte, the kind of names that don’t sign their reputation to a no-log claim casually. PwC and Deloitte have audited the server architecture, the Threat Protection backend, the kill-switch implementation, and the apps.

The most recent one (Deloitte Lithuania, February 2026) covered a sample of production servers across the network, the operational policies, and the customer-facing applications. The summary report is public. The detailed findings are available to NordVPN customers through the support portal. For a comparison against an even more privacy-maximalist provider, see our NordVPN vs Mullvad piece.

The latest NordVPN audit from February 2026 (Deloitte Lithuania) confirmed the no-log policy and certified the server infrastructure. Six audits across eight years is the strongest pattern in the VPN industry, better than ExpressVPN (5 audits), better than Proton (3 by Securitum), and far ahead of anything in the budget tier.

NordVPN Speed Test: The Best Results in May 2026

VPN performance lives or dies on the speed numbers. Our NordVPN speed testing ran across 3 locations and 3 times of day (morning at 09:00 local, afternoon at 14:00, evening at 20:00, because VPN load is highest in the evening on US and European servers), 3 days in a row. Test rig: Windows 11 desktop on a 342 Mbps network in southeastern Europe, connected over Ethernet. Baseline:

Native Speed Test
© speedtest.net

The first morning we ran the Tokyo test, we got a 47% download loss and were confused. Turned out the auto-protocol had picked OpenVPN UDP because the NordLynx server we hit was momentarily congested. Switching to NordLynx manually pulled the loss down to 34.8%. The numbers below are averaged across all nine measurements per location, using NordLynx for all tests.

We tested 3 popular locations: Europe (UK), the US, and Asia (Japan).

UK Speed Test Results:

Nordvpn Speed Test Uk Results

US Speed Test Results:

Nordvpn Us Speed Test Results
© Gizmodo

Japan Speed Test Results:

Nordvpn Japan Speed Test Results

All tests were done using the Auto protocol selection (which picked NordLynx for all three locations after our initial manual override). NordVPN is faster than other providers we tested across this round, most notably with low latency variation between the morning and evening windows on the European server.

UK Server US Server Japan Server
🔽 DL Speed Loss 5.35% 14.5% 34.8%
🔼 UL Speed Loss 5% 6.8% 9.1%
📶 Latency (ms) 42 ms 118 ms 221 ms

The Japan number deserves a note: at 8,000+ miles (12,800+ km) from our test location, 34.8% download loss is what physics dictates more than what NordVPN can fix. A direct line to Tokyo with no VPN runs about 200ms of latency from southeastern Europe at the speed of light through fiber. NordLynx adds 21ms of overhead on top.

For a focused speed and value comparison, see our NordVPN vs PIA analysis.

Is NordVPN Good for Streaming and Torrenting?

Over 30 days of testing, we accessed 28 Netflix country libraries (US, UK, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, India, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Argentina, Korea, Turkey, and 13 others). Two libraries had a brief proxy error on the first connection (Saudi Arabia and Egypt), which cleared after switching to a different server in the same country. The other 26 worked on the first try.

BBC iPlayer streamed iPlayer-quality 1080p without buffering on the London server. Hotstar worked through the Mumbai server. Obfuscated servers also unblock these services, useful in countries where streaming sites and the VPN itself are jointly blocked. NordVPN consistently outperforms CyberGhost’s streaming-dedicated servers in our tests.

Stream Content Freely With NordVPN

CyberGhost markets specific streaming-server labels, but those servers churn. Three of CyberGhost’s “Netflix UK optimized” servers failed in our test on the same day. The browser extension’s location spoofer, combined with a normal NordVPN tunnel, also unlocks sticky services like ESPN+ and Sky TV.

P2P testing was the most fun part of this review. We ran qBittorrent on a German server, downloading Linux Mint ISO (1.89 GB, 20+ active seeders). Sustained pull rate: 41 MB/s averaged across the download, among the best VPN-tunneled torrent rates we’ve recorded this year. The one missing piece for power torrenters: NordVPN doesn’t offer port forwarding.

Nordvpn Torrenting Test
© Gizmodo.com

For the typical user who downloads occasionally and seeds back what they can, NordVPN is still fast. NordVPN can also bind to torrent clients via SOCKS5, as documented in this guide. Useful for keeping non-torrent traffic outside the proxy while torrenting through it.

If your idea of entertainment includes Onion Over VPN exploration, those servers work for dark-web access too. Standard servers will cover the vast majority of users.

NordVPN Review: Server Network Size and Locations

Server count alone doesn’t predict quality, but NordVPN’s 9,400+ servers in 137 countries across 211+ locations mean you seldom connect to a congested server, even in the evening peak (we never saw a server above 60% load in our European test windows). RAM-only across the fleet, with optional Dedicated IPs.

NordVPN’s Smart DNS service is worth knowing about if you stream on devices that can’t run a VPN app, like Apple TV, smart TVs, or older game consoles. Smart DNS doesn’t encrypt traffic, but it does route DNS queries through NordVPN’s resolvers, which is enough to unblock most streaming services. The Smart DNS endpoints worked on the first try on our Apple TV 4K test.

Geographic coverage is genuinely broad. VPN servers in the UAE are present (most VPNs skip Middle Eastern presence because of operational complexity), Indian servers are back online after the IT regulations of 2022 caused a temporary exit, and African coverage spans South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria.

NordVPN does use virtual servers for some hard-to-host countries, meaning the IP geolocates to one country but the server physically lives in another. They’re clearly labeled in the server list now, which wasn’t true two years ago. A small but appreciable improvement in transparency.

Can NordVPN Bypass Internet Censorship?

Using a VPN in China isn’t illegal for individual travelers, but the Great Firewall blocks unobfuscated VPN traffic via DPI. Most consumer VPNs fail. NordVPN works in China in 2026. One of our contributors confirmed this on a 10-day Shanghai trip in May, using the NordVPN Android app downloaded before arrival (sideloaded APK, since Google Play is blocked there) and obfuscated servers exiting in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

I haven’t tested on the ground in China myself since the September 2024 GFW update. The reports from our contributor and the broader testing community remain consistent. Obfuscated servers stay up, NordWhisper is the newer fallback, and connection success is higher in the early morning before the GFW’s adaptive blocking warms up. Our full China page goes deeper into which specific servers held up.

Nordvpn China Obfuscated Server
© Gizmodo.com

We tested NordVPN in several other restricted regions during the review period. UAE: worked with obfuscated servers needed to access WhatsApp voice calls. Turkey: worked with standard NordLynx for most sites, obfuscated for X (formerly Twitter) during peak blocking windows. Qatar: clean access throughout. Russia is the trickier case, since VPN access has tightened sharply since 2022.

NordVPN officially withdrew physical servers from Russia in 2019, but Russian users can still connect to neighboring countries’ servers. A finding echoed in our NordVPN vs Astrill comparison: NordVPN works in most restrictive regions, while Astrill specializes in the hardest ones (mainland China, especially).

Customer Support Review: One of the Best Around

NordVPN is the largest VPN company by paid subscribers, and a chunk of that revenue funds a customer support operation that’s genuinely good. We opened a live chat on a Sunday at 23:14 UTC with a contrived problem: “Kill switch doesn’t seem to block Firefox specifically.” The agent picked up in 1 minute 47 seconds. The first response was templated and unhelpful (suggesting we restart the app).

We pushed back. Three minutes later, a more senior agent explained that the app-level kill switch was configured at a higher level than the system kill switch, and Firefox needed to be explicitly added to the app-level list. Email support is the slower option.  Our test ticket (sent on a Tuesday at 10:00 UTC) got a reply in 4 hours and 22 minutes, faster than the industry average of 24 hours.

The on-site documentation is a step ahead. We found the VPN setup guide for iPhone on NordVPN’s site referenced both the system VPN settings and the in-app Threat Protection toggles. That is more thorough than ExpressVPN’s equivalent page. With chat, email, and documentation working well, the support side isn’t a weak point.

The agent’s first instinct toward a templated reply is. But persistence got us to a useful answer in under five minutes total.

NordVPN Review 2026: Should I Get NordVPN?

✅ Yes, you should get NordVPN if you want the safest first VPN install, and travel to restrictive countries with any regularity. Yes, if Meshnet sounds even slightly useful to you, and if you’re on the fence about Threat Protection Pro, since the Plus plan is the easiest upgrade decision in this category.

❌ No, if you specifically need port forwarding for heavy torrent seeding. PIA handles that better. No, if you’re shopping purely on monthly price and don’t care about feature breadth. Surfshark and Mullvad both land lower per month. No, if you want a $1-2 lifetime deal. Those don’t exist at this quality level.

In the end, NordVPN’s renewal pricing is higher, the desktop UI takes a session to learn, and the lack of port forwarding is a genuine miss for a niche of users. But on the seven features that matter to most readers (speed, privacy audits, kill switch behavior, streaming reliability, mobile parity, support response, and refund honesty), NordVPN hits the top mark every time.

For the alternative path, our NordVPN alternatives guide covers Surfshark, ExpressVPN, and Proton in depth. If you click one link from this page, make it NordVPN’s 30-day refund. It’s the safest way to test the verdict above against your own use case.
