Shared Features
Both encrypt at 256-bit, both hold a kill switch capable of blocking traffic before a tunnel exists rather than only when one collapses, and both offer split tunneling across desktop and mobile. Both also filter ads, trackers, and malicious domains at the DNS level.
Mullvad lets you bar whole categories such as social media, gambling, or adult sites, which makes a workable parental control. Multi-hop appears on both, but differently. Mullvad lets you nominate the entry and exit servers yourself. NordVPN’s Double VPN uses fixed country pairs and moves faster.
Where They Differ
Mullvad is WireGuard and nothing else since January 2026, when OpenVPN was retired on the argument that a leaner codebase is one you can read. Mullvad VPN Beats NordVPN in Privacy Decisively
Neither records what you do. The gap is in how much they could reveal if compelled. Mullvad holds a session count, needed to enforce the five-device limit, and essentially nothing else. It never collected your identity to begin with, since sign-up produces a number rather than an account. More than ten firms have inspected it, Cure53 and Assured AB among them.
The clients are open source, so the code is checkable rather than certified. Then there’s the event where no certificate matches. Swedish police arrived at Mullvad’s office in 2023 holding a search warrant and left without seizing anything, because the data they came for had never existed.

Mullvad was never built for this and doesn’t claim otherwise. Netflix US usually opens, BBC iPlayer generally does, and the platforms with serious detection, Prime Video and Hulu among them, mostly refuse. Nothing is optimized for streaming because streaming isn’t the product.
NordVPN unblocked 20+ Netflix regions in testing, and its browser VPN has location spoofing for services that verify position through the browser as well as the IP. Its Smart DNS handles televisions and consoles that reject VPN software, which Mullvad has no equivalent for.
Torrenting: Mullvad VPN and NordVPN Are on Par
Genuinely level. P2P is permitted network-wide on both, NordVPN having merged its old torrent category into the general fleet during 2026. Swapping between the two on nearby servers produced no measurable difference.

This round has changed since our last update, and not in Mullvad’s favor. Dropping OpenVPN took bridge mode with it, and DAITA reshapes traffic patterns rather than concealing the protocol, so inspection hardware hunting for WireGuard signatures still finds them. Our attempts from China were inconsistent, and our Mullvad review reflects the same picture.
NordVPN’s obfuscated servers make a tunnel resemble everyday HTTPS, and testers on the mainland connect through them week after week. NordWhisper handles the filtering on office and campus networks. Both VPNs work in the UAE, Turkey, Qatar, and Russia, where blocking is less sophisticated.
