Four VPNs now work on Amazon’s newest Fire TV Stick. ExpressVPN published its Vega OS app on September 3, 2026, joining NordVPN, Surfshark and IPVanish, while Proton VPN and CyberGhost cover Fire OS alone. We measured these five on a Fire TV Stick 4K Plus wired to a 190.36 Mbps connection in September 2026 and checked 14 streaming platforms on each. NordVPN came first on British, American, and Japanese servers, at an average loss of 3.0%.

CyberGhost, fifth in our ranking, lost 7.7% and was blocked by three streaming services. All five install from the Amazon Appstore in a couple of minutes and leave enough speed for 4K. The 2014 model takes no VPN app, and Smart DNS or a router covers that one instead.

Best VPN for Firestick: Top 5 Fire TV Stick VPNs Ranked in September 2026

  1. NordVPN – Best VPN for Firestick overall
  2. Proton VPN – Best Fire TV VPN for privacy
  3. ExpressVPN – Best Fire Stick VPN for blocked networks
  4. Surfshark – Best Amazon Fire TV VPN for a full household
  5. CyberGhost – Cheapest VPN for Firestick

Fire TV Stick VPNs Compared

Amazon’s app store decides most of this. A VPN with no Fire TV app covers the stick only through Smart DNS or a router.

VPN Best for Fire TV app Smart DNS Devices Starting price
NordVPN Overall performance Fire OS and Vega OS SmartPlay 10 $3.49/mo
Proton VPN Privacy Fire OS No 10 $2.99/mo
ExpressVPN Blocked networks Fire OS and Vega OS MediaStreamer 10 $2.99/mo
Surfshark Households Fire OS and Vega OS No Unlimited $2.49/mo
CyberGhost Low price Fire OS Yes 7 $2.19/mo

How we tested: the download figures come from a Fire TV Stick 4K Plus, wired to the router through Amazon’s USB-C Ethernet adapter on a 190.36 Mbps connection, measured in September 2026 with each app on its fastest protocol and connected to British, American, and Japanese servers. Streaming access was checked separately on Windows 11, with the browser cache and cookies deleted before each session.

Best VPNs for Firestick in 2026

1. NordVPN: Best VPN for Firestick Overall

Pros

  • First on Vega OS
  • SmartPlay Smart DNS
  • Low speed loss
  • Netflix and iPlayer unblocked
  • Ad and tracker blocking
  • Free Android trial

Cons

  • Steep renewal price
  • No free plan

NordVPN was the first VPN on Vega OS, in November 2025, so the Fire TV Stick 4K Select takes the app as easily as a 4K Max does. The download from the Amazon Appstore costs nothing; the subscription unlocks it. It came first on every server we tried. The British one measured 189.13 Mbps against our 190.36 Mbps baseline, the American one 187.92 Mbps, and the Japanese one 176.81 Mbps, an average loss of 3.0%. Each figure is far past the 25 Mbps a 4K stream requires.

All 14 streaming services opened, including Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and Peacock. However, Pluto TV and Prime Video detected the connection on a few attempts and wanted a second server. NordVPN also tops our main VPN ranking, and NordLynx is the protocol behind those speeds. The price is the weak point. The Basic plan costs $3.49 a month on the 27-month term, $94.23 for the whole term, and the renewal is $139.08 a year, the highest of the five.

A 30-day money-back guarantee covers the first term, and signing up on Android adds a 3-day trial that works on the Fire TV app under the same account.

2. Proton VPN: Best Amazon Fire TV Stick VPN for Privacy

Pros

  • Independently audited
  • Stealth obfuscation
  • NetShield ad blocker
  • Open-source apps
  • VPN Accelerator
  • Swiss jurisdiction

Cons

  • Fire OS only
  • No Smart DNS
  • Slow email support

Proton VPN covers Fire OS 7 and newer, which includes the 4K Max, the 4K Plus, and the third-generation stick, but not the older Fire OS 5 models. Owners of a Fire TV Stick 4K Select wait for a Vega OS build. The American server recorded 183.45 Mbps with VPN Accelerator on, the setting the app uses by default, and the Japanese one 169.74 Mbps, for an average loss of 5.3%. Hulu, Disney+, Pluto TV and ITVX blocked it, leaving 10 of the 14 streaming platforms open

British catch-up TV is one job it can’t do. Our streaming ranking has the streaming results in full. Securitum has audited the no-log policy in five consecutive years, most recently in May 2026 at Proton AG’s Zürich office, and NetShield blocked 126 of 135 ad and tracker domains on d3ward’s test. Stealth disguises the connection on networks that filter VPN traffic. Support is slow by comparison.

Live chat took about a minute to produce a human agent, and one email query took a full day, which the NordVPN comparison covers in more detail. The 2-year plan costs $2.99 a month, $71.76 for 24 months, with a 30-day refund that covers the unused portion only.

3. ExpressVPN: Best Fire Stick VPN for Blocked Networks

Pros

  • Vega OS support
  • Lightway Turbo protocol
  • MediaStreamer Smart DNS
  • QR code sign-in
  • Obfuscation by default

Cons

  • No MultiHop
  • Few app settings

ExpressVPN’s Vega OS app arrived on September 3, 2026, the fourth to appear on Vega OS and the newest one for a Fire TV Stick 4K Select. Signing in uses a QR code, so there’s no password to type with a remote, and favorite locations pin to the first screen. It came second on the stick, at 187.26 Mbps on the British server, 185.02 Mbps on the American one and 172.43 Mbps on the Japanese, an average loss of 4.6%.

All 14 streaming apps opened, with ITVX and Prime Video detecting it a few times. Obfuscation applies to every connection with no toggle to find, which is why it keeps working in China and on hotel networks that block VPNs. MediaStreamer covers a first-generation stick. The Basic plan costs $2.99 a month, but current ExpressVPN discount codes change, so check before paying. The app itself is thin on settings, and there is still no multi-hop.

4. Surfshark: Best Fire TV Stick VPN for a Whole Household

Pros

  • Unlimited devices
  • Many Netflix libraries
  • NoBorders obfuscation
  • Low starting price
  • Alternative ID included

Cons

  • ITVX blocked
  • No first-gen support
  • Basic Vega OS app

One Surfshark subscription covers every television in the house plus the phones, because the account has no device limit. Two sticks, a laptop, and three phones cost the same as one connection. Its Vega OS app arrived in May 2026 and covers the core alone. WireGuard and a location list are there, while CleanWeb ad blocking and the kill switch are still absent on Vega OS.

The Fire OS version has both. The British server measured 188.88 Mbps and the American one 182.31 Mbps, and the app opened 13 of the 14 platforms, including every Netflix library we tried. ITVX was the exception and blocked it on every attempt. Connection times were the other irritation. Most locations connected in a couple of seconds, though a handful took several more. The Starter plan costs $2.49 a month, $67.23 for 27 months, then $79 a year.

5. CyberGhost: Cheapest VPN for Fire TV Stick

Pros

  • Streaming-labeled servers
  • Smart DNS included
  • Long refund window
  • Low monthly rate
  • Automatic Wi-Fi protection

Cons

  • Netflix Japan blocked
  • No obfuscation
  • Limited device count

CyberGhost labels its servers by platform, so the Fire TV list shows entries for Netflix US, BBC iPlayer and Hulu instead of plain city names. On a remote control, picking a labeled server beats hunting through a country list. It costs $2.19 a month, $56.94 for 26 months, the lowest starting rate of the five. After that, the charge is $56.94 every 12 months, which is $4.75 a month. The 45-day money-back guarantee applies to the long plans, and 14 days to monthly subscriptions.

The American server measured 182.15 Mbps, close to the rest, and the Japanese one measured 159.67 Mbps, a 16.1% loss. That leaves a three-location average of 7.7%, the largest of the five. Of the 14 streaming platforms, 11 opened. Netflix Japan stayed blocked even from CyberGhost’s own Japanese server, and JioHotstar and Disney+ were blocked as well.

There is no obfuscation, so restrictive networks that inspect traffic will see the connection. The same server labels extend to gaming, so a console on the network is covered by the same account.

How to Install a VPN on Firestick

Installing a VPN on Firestick takes about five minutes, and the sign-up goes faster from a phone than from the remote.

Subscribe to a VPN

Pick a VPN with a Fire TV app and subscribe on a phone or PC first, since typing an email address and a card number with a remote is slow. We use NordVPN in this walkthrough, at 69% off on the 2-year plan. Confirm the account from the email, and set the password there, because the Fire TV app requires it in the next step.

Start a NordVPN Plan

Install the App From the Amazon Appstore

On the stick, open the Appstore from the home row and search for the VPN by name. It appears at the top of the results. Select it, press Download, and wait about a minute.

Open the app and sign in with the email address and password from the first step. On a Vega OS stick, Amazon also asks once for permission to create a VPN connection. Accept it.

Connect and start watching

Open the location list, choose the country whose catalog you want, and press the connect button. The app reconnects on its own after a reboot. Netflix then loads the chosen country’s library, BBC iPlayer opens on a British server, and you can watch Pluto TV from outside the US.

Which Fire TV Sticks Support a VPN App

Amazon changed operating systems in October 2025, so the best VPN for Amazon Fire Stick owners now depends on which model is plugged into the television.

  • Fire OS sticks cover the Fire TV Stick 4K Max, the 4K Plus, the Fire TV Cube, and every stick back to the second generation from 2016. All five VPNs in our ranking have an app for them, and a VPN with no Appstore listing can be sideloaded with the Downloader app.
  • Vega OS sticks are the Fire TV Stick 4K Select from October 2025 and the 2026 Fire TV Stick HD, and Vega OS VPN apps had a slow start there. Vega OS is built on Linux instead of Android, so every app had to be rebuilt from scratch, and sideloading an APK is no longer possible. Amazon switched VPN support on at the end of November 2025. Four VPNs have published an app since: NordVPN and IPVanish first, Surfshark in May 2026, and ExpressVPN in September 2026. Proton VPN, CyberGhost, and Private Internet Access have not published one yet.
  • The first-generation stick from 2014 doesn’t support VPNs on any operating system. Smart DNS or a router covers it.

Smart DNS and Router Setups for Older Sticks

Neither method installs an app on the stick itself, so they work on the 2014 model and on any television with no VPN app in its store.

Smart DNS

Smart DNS changes which DNS servers the stick uses, which moves the apparent location for streaming apps with no encryption applied. NordVPN, ExpressVPN and CyberGhost include it; Proton VPN and Surfshark don’t. Here is the NordVPN version:

  1. Sign in on NordVPN’s website and open Services, then NordVPN.
  2. Find SmartDNS and press Enable, then Activate SmartDNS. Activation takes around ten minutes.
  3. Return to the same page and copy the two addresses it shows.
  4. On the stick, open Settings, then Network, and open your network’s properties.
  5. Enter both addresses under DNS Settings and confirm.

That opens most American platforms, including HBO Max, Peacock, Netflix US, and Prime Video. The catch is coverage: Smart DNS location lists are short next to a full server list, and nothing is encrypted.

VPN Router for Firestick

Putting the VPN on a router covers the stick, the television, and every other device on the network, and it counts as one connection. A router with VPN firmware built in makes this a ten-minute job. Flashing new firmware onto a router that wasn’t built for it can end with a dead router and a void warranty, so check the VPN’s own model list first.

What a VPN Changes on a Fire TV Stick

Most people install one for the streaming catalogs. Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ divide their libraries by country, and a British address on the stick opens BBC iPlayer from the US the same way an Australian one opens 9Now. The same applies while traveling: a Canadian or British subscription keeps working from a hotel room in another country. Disney+ is the exception.

It blocked every desktop app in our round. NordVPN and ExpressVPN opened it only with location spoofing switched on in their browser extensions, and a Fire TV Stick has no browser extension, so we can’t confirm Disney+ from the stick itself. An ISP that throttles video traffic can’t identify it inside an encrypted connection, so a VPN for IPTV on Firestick is standard advice.

Encryption doesn’t change the legal position of an unlicensed service, and it stops speed shaping on a legitimate one. NordVPN, Proton VPN, and CyberGhost block ads and trackers, which cuts the pre-roll on free channels. A foreign address also opens free MotoGP streams, and the wider case for a VPN covers privacy.

Which VPN Protocol to Use on a Fire TV Stick

A Fire TV Stick has a slow ARM processor and 1 to 2 GB of memory, and the encryption work happens on that same chip. Choose WireGuard where the app offers it; NordLynx and Lightway are built on the same lightweight principle. OpenVPN encrypts the same traffic with far more code, which costs speed on a processor this small. Leave the app on automatic unless a network blocks the connection; then switch to NordWhisper, Stealth, or NoBorders.

How Much a Firestick VPN Costs

A cheap VPN for Firestick starts at about $2 a month, and the advertised rates cluster between $2 and $3.50 on long plans:

CyberGhost renews at $56.94 a year, Surfshark at $79, Proton VPN at $83.88, ExpressVPN at $99.95, and NordVPN at $139.08, so the five cost between 2.2 and 3.3 times their opening rate from the second term. Divide the first term plus one renewal by the months covered, and the best value VPN for Firestick over that window is CyberGhost at $3.00 a month, with Surfshark at $3.75, Proton VPN at $4.32, ExpressVPN at $4.59, and NordVPN at $5.98.

Monthly plans cost between $9.99 and $14.99. If the budget is zero, free Fire TV VPNs exist with data caps attached, and our low-cost ranking covers the paid end in more detail if you’re interested.

Best VPN for Firestick: Conclusion

NordVPN takes first place on the strength of its speed figures, the full 14 streaming services it supports, and an app that has been on Vega OS longer than any other. Proton VPN follows for privacy work, with five consecutive audits behind the no-log claim, and the Fire OS limitation comes with it. ExpressVPN comes third for hotel, campus, and office networks that block VPN traffic, since its obfuscation works with no setting to find, and the speed cost came to 4.6%.

Surfshark covers a house with several televisions on one subscription, phones included. CyberGhost costs the least and has the longest refund window, with the slowest speeds of the five and no Netflix Japan. The best Firestick VPN for a household in the UK or Canada is the one that opens the catalogs it pays for, so test the streaming apps you use inside the 30-day money-back window.

FAQ About VPN for Firestick

How much is a VPN for Firestick?

The cheapest Firestick VPN is CyberGhost at $2.19 a month on its longest plan, followed by Surfshark at $2.49 and NordVPN at $3.49. Every VPN renews at a higher price charged every year after the initial term.

Which VPN works best on a Fire TV Stick and is simplest to set up?

NordVPN is the simplest, installing from the Amazon Appstore and connecting from the remote in two presses. Proton VPN follows the same path on Fire OS models.

Can a VPN work on Vega OS Fire TV Sticks?

Yes. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and IPVanish publish Vega OS apps for the Fire TV Stick 4K Select. Proton VPN and CyberGhost cover Fire OS models only.

Do VPNs work on older Fire TV Sticks?

Yes, from the second generation onward. The first-generation stick supports no VPN app, so it requires Smart DNS or a VPN-enabled router instead.

Which VPN is best for a Firestick in the UK?

NordVPN is the best Firestick VPN in the UK, opening BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 from British servers. Proton VPN covers iPlayer but not ITVX.

Does a VPN slow down a Fire TV Stick?

Yes, slightly. Encryption costs a small share of download speed, and a 4K stream requires around 25 Mbps, which every major VPN leaves intact on a home connection.

Is a VPN required for IPTV on a Firestick?

No, though it stops an internet provider from identifying and throttling video traffic. Encryption doesn't change the legal position of an unlicensed IPTV service.
