How to Watch Pluto TV Abroad in 2026

Outside its 30 countries, Pluto TV shows one screen: “Pluto TV is not available in your location.” It appeared on every connection we made from outside that list. On a US server, NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and PIA unblocked the 400+ channel US TV lineup, and so did the free plans from Windscribe and PrivadoVPN. Proton VPN and CyberGhost failed with error screens.

Unblocking Pluto TV on a US Server

Connect the VPN to a US server, then go to pluto.tv or start the Pluto TV app. Pluto TV checks which country your IP address is in and shows that country’s channels, so on a US server you see the American channel selection.

To watch on a phone, Fire TV, Roku, or Apple TV, install the VPN on that same device. Sony TVs use Google TV and support VPN apps. LG TVs don’t, so they require the VPN’s Smart DNS feature or a VPN set up on the router.

Pluto TV Available Countries

Pluto TV operates in 30 countries across the Americas and Europe, and each country has its own channel selection. In Australia, Pluto TV channels are available through Network 10’s streaming service. US territories such as Puerto Rico are excluded.

No country in Africa or Asia is on the list, so Morocco, Ghana, and Senegal are excluded. Greece and Haiti are missing as well. Connections from Serbia, Algeria, India, Finland, and Belgium returned the location error. Meanwhile, PIA’s server in Uruguay unblocked the Latin American catalog. Finland is outside the Nordic launch, which covered Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

Channels by Country, Accounts, and Ads

The US guide lists 400+ live channels and the UK guide 100+, so a US IP address brings up the largest choice. A UK IP address switches to British channels. Canada, Mexico, and Brazil have separate libraries too, and a Canadian VPN server switches to Canada’s. An account is optional. Ours signed in on US and UK servers with no region error. Creating one on the US version requires a valid ZIP code.

A VPN can’t remove Pluto TV’s ads. The breaks are part of the video stream, so the ad blockers built into VPNs leave them in place. Ad-free viewing requires a paid service, such as Peacock, whose Premium Plus plan removes most ads.

1. NordVPN: Best for the US Pluto TV Channel Lineup

NordVPN unblocked Pluto TV on its New York server, and the live guide played without interruption. The US connection measured 181.50 Mbps, 4.7% under our baseline. The app lists 55 US cities, and NFL+ played from its New York location when we tested out-of-market NFL games. Many smart TVs and consoles don’t support VPN apps, and Smart DNS covers those.

The NordVPN account page provides two DNS addresses, and entering them on the TV switches it to the US catalog. Onion Over VPN servers are included too, for users who want to access the dark web through Tor Browser. NordVPN costs $3.49 a month on the Basic plan, $94.23 for the 27-month term, with 10 devices allowed. The drawback is renewal, at $139.08 a year after the first term.

2. ExpressVPN: Best for One-Click Setup

ExpressVPN unblocked Pluto TV from New York on its Automatic protocol setting, with nothing else to configure. Its connection time, one or two seconds, is the quickest we’ve recorded from any VPN, and its US server measured 177.03 Mbps, a 7.0% loss. The US list has 63 locations, with every state represented.

Customization is thin, and ExpressVPN still has no MultiHop feature. Native Apple TV and router apps cover a television with no DNS setup. Mobile users can try it first, though the trial requires card details at signup, as our ExpressVPN trial guide explains. At $83.72 for 28 months, ExpressVPN’s Basic plan averages $2.99 a month and covers 10 devices.

3. Surfshark: Best for Unlimited Devices

Surfshark’s New York server unblocked Pluto TV over WireGuard with post-quantum protection, and the live channel played normally. Surfshark’s standard US server test measured 170.38 Mbps, 10.5% below our baseline and far above the roughly 2.7 Mbps the stream used.

Connecting took longer than on NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or PIA, though playback was normal once connected. The Starter plan has no device limit, so one subscription covers every phone, laptop, and TV in a household. The Starter plan costs $2.49 a month, $67.23 for the first 27 months.

4. Private Internet Access: Best Price for Pluto TV

Private Internet Access unblocked Pluto TV on its Indiana server, and its UK Streaming Optimized server unblocked the UK library with our account signed in. Pluto TV buffered more often on PIA than on NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Surfshark. Its Windows app also looks dated, with a cluttered layout. Price is PIA’s strength. It’s a cheap VPN at $1.99 a month on the two-year plan, with no limit on connected devices.

Failed in Our Test: Proton VPN and CyberGhost

Proton VPN: Detected Across US Servers

Pluto TV detected Proton VPN on about ten US locations we tried, including Boston (US-MA#138, WireGuard), and showed “Oh no! You may be using a VPN or proxy.” It failed the same way in our previous streaming test.

Its support documentation lists the service among those its US servers unblock, with a note that it may not always work. It remains a strong privacy VPN, covered in our Proton VPN review.

CyberGhost: Error 3005 on Two Servers

CyberGhost connected to New York and then Washington, and Pluto TV returned Error Code 3005 twice, a playback error saying it was having trouble with the video. The VPN warning never appeared, and the stream didn’t start on either server.

CyberGhost did unblock it in our first streaming round, so results on its US servers vary.

The Free Plans: Windscribe and PrivadoVPN

The data allowance limits how long a free plan lasts on Pluto TV. A 30-minute session on Windscribe used about 600 MB, roughly 2.7 Mbps on average.

Windscribe unblocked Pluto TV on its free Atlanta server. The free plan includes 10 GB a month with a confirmed email address, a little over eight hours of streaming, or 2 GB without one. The connection stops at the cap, and Windscribe’s free plan was blocked in an earlier test.

PrivadoVPN unblocked it from New York. The monthly 10 GB requires a manual renewal, and once it’s used up, speed falls to 1 Mbps, below the stream’s rate.

Windscribe and PrivadoVPN have free Android apps, and the best free VPNs list covers their other limits. A paid VPN with a free trial or refund window removes the cap for a month.

Pluto TV Not Working With a VPN

Switch to a different US server first, since a new server provides a new IP address. Then match the message on screen:

In a desktop browser, NordVPN’s browser extension with location spoofing enabled is the next fix. It aligns the browser’s reported location with the server, and it unblocked the stream in Chrome. Our Chrome VPN guide covers the other extensions. Clear pluto.tv’s cookies after switching countries, since a stored session can keep the previous catalog.

When none of these fixes help, change VPN. No fix we tried made Pluto TV play on Proton VPN or CyberGhost, while NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and Private Internet Access unblocked it. Request a refund from the VPN that fails and move to one of those four.

Pluto TV Blocked on a School or Work Network

Connect to a VPN before opening pluto.tv. A network filter blocks the site by its domain, and a VPN encrypts the request, so the filter only sees a VPN connection. Where the network blocks VPNs, obfuscation disguises the connection.

ExpressVPN applies it automatically, and NordVPN’s NordWhisper protocol cost us 12.8% of our download speed on a UK server. School and office policies can prohibit VPNs, so check the rules. Our school VPN guide has the setup in more detail.

Our Verdict

Pluto TV is free, which makes the VPN the only cost of watching it abroad. NordVPN ranks first. Pluto TV played on its New York server without interruption, NordVPN recorded the quickest US download, and its Smart DNS covers televisions without VPN apps. The renewal price is the drawback.

ExpressVPN has the simplest setup, Surfshark covers a whole household on one plan, and Private Internet Access costs the least and unblocks the UK version.
