Apps and Ease of Use Comparison

Platform coverage is effectively level. Both have apps for Windows, macOS, Linux with a graphical interface, iOS, Android, Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Android TV, and routers, plus browser extensions. NordVPN’s Linux GUI arrived in May 2025 and was open-sourced that year, closing the last meaningful gap between them.

Quality is where they diverge. PIA’s Windows client feels dated and takes a beat longer to respond, though connections establish in a few seconds and the mobile apps are considerably better than the desktop ones.

NordVPN’s interface is the more polished of the two, built around a world map with settings a click away, and that quality held across platforms in our NordVPN testing. PIA answers with connection count: unlimited devices against NordVPN’s 10.

Winner: Tie 🟰

NordVPN builds the better app, PIA removes the device limit. Which matters more depends on whether you’re covering three devices or thirteen.

PIA VPN is Cheaper than NordVPN By a Long Shot

Neither is expensive by cheap VPN standards, but one is clearly cheaper.

Private Internet Access Prices

PIA sells three plans, and the longest is the obvious pick. The 2-year term with two bonus months lands at $2.19/mo, roughly $57 up front, at 83% off. Monthly and 6-month terms cost considerably more. Add-ons stay cheap too: antivirus from about $1.45/mo, and a dedicated IP from around $2.50/mo. The refund window is 30 days.

NordVPN Prices

NordVPN sells four tiers across three terms. The 2-year Basic plan sits at $3.49/mo with 3 free months. Basic covers the VPN alone. The next tier up adds Threat Protection Pro, Double VPN, and NordPass, and it’s the one we’d point most people toward. Higher tiers bundle NordLocker storage and Coveron.

Annual plans shorten the commitment at a higher monthly rate, and monthly billing is poor value. NordVPN’s pricing moves with seasonal promotions, so the exact figure shifts through the year. Its dedicated IP costs $3.99/mo across 18 countries, noticeably above Private Internet Access.

Winner: Private Internet Access 🏆

PIA is $1.30 cheaper per month, and its add-ons undercut NordVPN’s too. Over a two-year term, that’s a meaningful gap for anyone looking to save serious money.

Security: NordVPN Edges Out PIA VPN (Slightly)

Both VPNs are safe, and there were no IP and DNS leaks in our tests. All features work well, basic and advanced, so in that aspect, you’re worry-free. So, this PIA vs NordVPN round boils down to what they offer. And in technological prowess, NordVPN is simply unbeatable in 2026:

Shared Security Features: All the Basics are There

Being some of the safest options to use in 2026, you’ll find ample similarities between Private Internet Access and NordVPN. They share the following features:

  • 256-bit GCM encryption. PIA also offers 128-bit for speed, though our PIA testing found no practical gain. Stay on 256-bit.
  • Kill switch. Both are reliable. NordVPN adds per-app control that PIA lacks, so it’s considerably more customizable
  • Ad blocking. NordVPN’s Web Protection against PIA’s MACE. Neither disappointed, though NordVPN blocked a few more percent of ads (99% vs MACE’s 96% in tests on AdBlock Turtlecute).
  • WireGuard. PIA uses it directly, NordVPN through NordLynx, which adds a double NAT layer so the server never stores your IP.
  • Split tunneling. Present on both, app-level; no site-level split tunneling.
  • Multi-hop. PIA lets you choose both servers in the chain. NordVPN uses fixed Double VPN pairs, which is less flexible.

Unique Features: NordVPN Takes Off

Specialty servers. PIA offers streaming-optimized servers and Multi-hop. NordVPN adds Onion Over VPN for reaching the dark web privately, obfuscated servers, and Double VPN. Its separate P2P category is gone as of 2026, since every standard server now carries torrent traffic.

Obfuscation. Both hide VPN traffic differently. NordVPN disguises the connection to defeat deep packet inspection and adds NordWhisper, a web-tunnel protocol for filtered networks like hotel or campus Wi-Fi.

PIA pairs Multi-hop with Shadowsocks or a SOCKS5 proxy. Shadowsocks is the simpler of the two: enable it, pick an exit country, and your traffic passes through the VPN server before being obfuscated. SOCKS5 needs manual setup and performed worse for us in terms of speed and stability.

Post-quantum encryption. NordVPN ships it as a toggle on NordLynx, hardening today’s traffic against future quantum decryption. PIA has no equivalent.

Meshnet. Exclusive to NordVPN and free with the app, linking up to 60 devices for remote access, file transfer, and traffic routing. Handy for unblocking sites through a device at home. NordVPN nearly retired it in 2025, reversed after user pushback, and is now open-sourcing it. We’ve used it many times for quickly sending files or bypassing various IP bans and geo-restrictions.

Such a feature can be used to unblock sites or even circumvent Netflix’s account-sharing restriction. PIA offers nothing similar, so it’s out of the game.

Threat Protection Pro. Beyond ad and tracker blocking, it scans downloads for malware and viruses and blocks malicious sites, with Lite versions on mobile. PIA’s MACE stops at ads and trackers.

Port forwarding. PIA supports it; NordVPN doesn’t. Useful for torrent throughput, though it works against anonymity.

Winner: NordVPN 🏆

More specialty servers, malware scanning, post-quantum encryption, and Meshnet. PIA’s customizable Multi-hop and port forwarding are genuine wins, but the overall spread favours NordVPN.

NordVPN and Private Internet Access Don’t Retain Logs

Neither keeps logs, and both have the paperwork to show it. Jurisdiction is the only structural difference: NordVPN operates from Panama, PIA from the USA, a founding Five Eyes member.

Pia Vpn Log Policy
© Private Internet Access

PIA’s US base matters less than it sounds. Its no-log policy has been tested in court more than once, and investigators came away with nothing because nothing existed to hand over. Deloitte has since audited the policy, RAM-only servers back it up, and PIA publishes its app source code for anyone to inspect. Strong US-based VPNs do exist, and this is the clearest example.

Nordvpn No Log Policy

NordVPN stores no IP addresses, timestamps, browsing history, or identifying data either. Deloitte confirmed the policy again in February 2026, the sixth consecutive audit in a run stretching back to 2018, with PwC handling earlier rounds.

Winner: Tie 🟰

One has the better jurisdiction; the other has courtroom proof. NordVPN’s audit cadence is longer; PIA’s evidence is harder to argue with. Either way, your data isn’t being kept.

NordVPN is Faster Than PIA: Speed Test from August

We ran three tests a day for three days from Southeastern Europe, using UK, US, and Japan servers with protocol selection left on automatic. Our baseline:

Native Speed Test

Now, let’s see the results:

Download Speed Loss 🔽 Upload Speed Loss 🔼
Private Internet Access 26% 24%
NordVPN 18% 7%

NordVPN held 8 percentage points more download throughput and 17 more on uploads. PIA stayed respectable everywhere, and neither will bottleneck an ordinary connection, but the gap widened with distance.

UK (Download/Upload) US (Download/Upload) Japan (Download/Upload)
Private Internet Access 298.69/17.42 Mbps 261.93/12.84 Mbps 197.89/14.31 Mbps
NordVPN 324.25/18.68 Mbps 292.75/18.31 Mbps 223.54/17.85 Mbps

Winner: NordVPN 🏆

NordLynx preserved more speed on every server we tested, and the upload margin is wide enough to notice on video calls and large transfers.

Streaming and Torrent Downloads: NordVPN Takes It

Here’s why NordVPN takes both streaming and P2P categories.

Streaming: NordVPN is Way Better

NordVPN opened 25+ Netflix catalogs in testing against PIA’s five to ten, and it handled Prime Video, Hulu, and HBO Max without hunting for a working server. Its browser extension adds location spoofing, which is how reaching ESPN Plus from abroad stays painless. PIA gets there too, with more effort.

Expect to use its streaming servers, cycle between them, and occasionally switch to OpenVPN. It reliably unblocks Netflix US, so it isn’t unusable, just slower going. Our streaming VPN rankings put the difference in context.

Torrenting: Tighter Comparison

This is close. Both permit P2P on every server, and were fast and leak-free throughout. NordVPN retired its dedicated P2P category in 2026 and enabled torrenting network-wide, so there’s no special server to hunt for on either service now.

Nordvpn Torrenting Test
© Gizmodo

PIA offers SOCKS5 and port forwarding, where NordVPN offers only SOCKS5. Port forwarding lifts throughput at some cost to anonymity, so whether it counts as an advantage depends on your priorities, as our torrenting VPN guide explains.

Pia Vpn Torrenting
© Gizmodo

In practice NordVPN’s lower speed loss meant we could torrent from a distant server without much penalty. With PIA VPN, we used nearby servers.

Winner: NordVPN 🏆

Streaming decides it. Torrenting is nearly level, and PIA’s port forwarding is a legitimate edge, but 25 Netflix libraries against roughly seven is not a close call.

PIA vs NordVPN: Server Locations Compared

PIA fields far more machines. NordVPN reaches far more places.

NordVPN Private Internet Access
Servers 9,500+ 26,000+
Countries 149 91
Specialty types 4 3
Raw server count matters less than it looks. What you feel day to day is whether a nearby country is available, and NordVPN covers 58 more of them. It also carries the wider specialty lineup. PIA holds one advantage worth naming: servers in all 50 US states, which NordVPN doesn’t match despite running over 3,400 US servers on 10 Gbps ports.
If you need an IP in a specific state for banking or local sport, PIA is the one that has it. Elsewhere, NordVPN obliterates PIA VPN.

Winner: NordVPN 🏆

149 countries against 91, plus more specialty server types. PIA’s state-level US coverage is the better option for one specific job.

NordVPN is More Consistent in China Than PIA VPN

Our testers in China connected reliably through NordVPN’s obfuscated servers, and NordWhisper handles the lighter filtering found on hotel, campus, and office networks. PIA managed it occasionally using Shadowsocks.

SOCKS5 didn’t work there at all. Outside China, the picture evens out, with both connecting without complaint from Turkey, Russia, Iran, and the Gulf states. Our China VPN guide covers the current picture in more detail.

Winner: NordVPN 🏆

More consistent in China, the hardest test there is. Anywhere less restrictive, either provider will do.

NordVPN vs Private Internet Access: Final Verdict

NordVPN takes it 5 rounds to 1, with apps and logging finishing level. The case for PIA is narrow. It’s $1.30 cheaper per month, it drops the device limit, it publishes its source code, and it covers all 50 US states. If budget or device count is your deciding factor, it’s the correct pick, and you won’t be compromising on privacy.

NordVPN earns the extra dollar elsewhere: 58 more countries, measurably better speeds, 25 Netflix libraries against a handful, post-quantum encryption, and obfuscation that actually holds up in China. It also outperforms ExpressVPN in our current rankings. For most readers, that combination is worth the difference.
