What Counts as Proof of a No-Log Policy

• An independent audit. An accounting or security firm inspects servers, configurations, and internal processes, then publishes an assurance report. The useful detail is the scope: an audit of the apps says nothing about the servers, and an audit from 2019 says nothing about 2026. The company also commits to no throttling and no discrimination between devices, protocols, or apps. ExpressVPN’s policy names 7 categories of data it may collect, and the account ones are a name, an email address, and payment details. No browsing history, traffic destination, data content, DNS queries, and, on the connection side, no source IP, no outgoing VPN IP address, no timestamp, and no session duration. TrustedServer keeps everything in RAM and restarts servers on a schedule, discarding the data that accumulated. KPMG assessed that architecture under ISAE 3000 Type 1.

It gave reasonable assurance as of 28 February 2025, finding no personally identifiable information written to or exported from a server. PIA collects an email address, payment data, and, for US customers, a state and zip code for sales tax. No other policy here requires a location, and there’s a workaround: pay in cryptocurrency and PIA covers the tax itself, so nothing about where you live is collected. The exclusions are stated. No browsing history, connected content, user IP addresses, connection timestamps, bandwidth logs, or DNS queries. Servers use RAM, and open-source apps mean the code can be checked line by line.

Surfshark’s policy is the most specific about timing. A user ID, an IP address, and connection timestamps stay on the server for the length of your session, then disappear 15 minutes after it ends. Nothing else is collected. Not the sites you open, not your session details, not your bandwidth use. The company operates from Amsterdam, and Dutch law requires no storage or reporting from a VPN service.

The policy also states plainly that personal data is never sold, rented, or traded. Deloitte and Cure53 have both audited the service. What’s missing compared to the other four is an external test: no seizure, no subpoena, no published warrant that would show the policy under pressure.

One, in practice. Proton VPN’s free tier is covered by the same no-log policy as the paid plans, unusual enough to be the whole answer. It applies no data cap, and the company states that free servers may be speed-limited during heavy use. The trade-offs are ordinary: no server choice, 1 device, no streaming, and no P2P. For browsing and messaging without a record, it does the job.

Treat every other free service with suspicion. Server capacity costs money, and a company giving it away without subscriptions is funding it some other way (typically by storing and then selling your personal data).
