In my testing, detection was 99.8% with 5 false alarms. That false alarm count contradicts the lab result. AV-Comparatives recorded 4 for Bitdefender in March, against 9 each for Norton and Avast. Avast One’s free tier is a good product and actually the best free antivirus. It uses the same real-time engine as the paid version. Free is not a weaker scanner here; it is the same scanner with fewer things around it. In May 2026, Avast rebuilt the app around that idea. There is a free base, and paid modules are switched on individually inside the same dashboard.

Avast’s 2024 FTC Settlement, and What It Means Now

In February 2024, the US Federal Trade Commission settled with Avast over the sale of browsing data through its Jumpshot subsidiary. The order carried a $16.5 million payment and a ban on selling browsing data for advertising. Against 50 malware samples fetched through a browser, Threat Protection Pro blocked 45 and let 5 reach the disk, a 90% block rate and the weakest detection figure here, but two things belong alongside it. The set is 50 files, smaller than the one used on the full scanners, because each has to be pulled over the network individually. Threat Protection Pro sees files in transit.

Five getting past is a different failure from a scanner missing five already on a drive. Phishing is where it earns its place. AV-TEST is right that McAfee stays out of the way in daily use. It is also true that its full scan is the most resource-expensive here in 2026.

Hardware features like TPM 2.0 and virtualization-based security (VBS) with HVCI safeguard credentials and kernel memory.
