The fastest VPN is precisely what it sounds like: A fast, stable, and reliable VPN service. No one likes slow VPN services. They’re a slog to use, and, above all, they induce a sense of desperation and annoyance. Don’t fret – we’ll steer clear of these today. This guide will answer your burning question.

What is the fastest VPN in 2026? Or, to rephrase it, which VPN providers offer the best speed at the moment? We tested dozens, and the majority weren’t so great. However, we also found very fast VPNs for streaming, downloading torrents, browsing, gaming, and everything else. Plus, we included their speed test results.

Fastest VPN Services Speed Test 2026 Comparison

Here’s a brief overview of the speeds of our selected providers. The VPN speed comparison table displays the average speed loss based on our testing. Lower values indicate better performance, and based on them, NordVPN is the clear winner.

⬇️ Download Speed Loss ⬆️ Upload Speed Loss
NordVPN 🥇 18% 7%
ExpressVPN 🥈 24% 9%
PIA VPN 🥉 26% 24%
Surfshark 27% 32%
CyberGhost 42% 16%
Proton VPN 44% 22%

Our VPN Speed Test Process Explained (Important)

Before we present the fastest VPN services we peeked at, let’s dive deeper into our testing procedure. It’s irrational to think that testing only a single server location is enough. We used several locations in our tests – they include:

  • The United Kingdom
  • The United States
  • Japan

However, for accurate testing, we tried to mimic real-world use. For this reason, we tested each of the fastest VPN options for a month, three times a day: in the morning, at midday, and in the evening when networks are usually the busiest. As for the speed test software, we stuck with the basics – Ookla (speedtest.net).

All tests were performed on our Windows 11 desktop computer, using a wired (Ethernet) connection. WireGuard (and its derivatives) was also used in all tested VPNs. Another thing to point out is that we used the best results from our tests. Finally, we’ll mention our base of operation, which was Belgrade (Europe).

With our testing procedure for the fastest VPN for 2026 explained, it’s time to get on with the discussion. Above is a screenshot of our non-VPN internet speeds used in our extensive tests and evaluations.

Pros

  • Fastest service
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • In-house protocols
  • Streaming & torrenting
  • Huge server network
  • Rock-solid security

Cons

  • Not beginner-friendly
  • Higher renewal cost

NordVPN is the fastest VPN service overall. It’s the top performer in download and upload speeds. Not to mention its low latency, making NordVPN a solid VPN for gaming or even streaming on Netflix. During our VPN speed tests, NordVPN displayed excellent results that other VPNs simply couldn’t match.

UK 324.25 Mbps 18.68 Mbps 41 ms
US 292.75 Mbps 18.31 Mbps 136 ms
Japan 223.54 Mbps 17.85 Mbps 280 ms

✅ Features of NordVPN

As you see above, the UK server offered speeds of more than 300 Mbps, with the US server being close to that. This allows NordVPN to perform well in all aspects. Its real-world use is buttery-smooth, and even its P2P servers are amazingly fast for torrenting. NordVPN offers much more than sheer speed.

For example, its 9,000+ servers are based on the 10 Gbps infrastructure – another point for its performance. The VPN also takes full advantage of NordLynx, a proprietary WireGuard-based solution with blazing-quick connections. Apart from speed, the VPN is exceptionally secure thanks to Double VPN and 256-bit encryption.

Considering its no-logging policy and RAM-exclusive servers, it’s easy to see why NordVPN tops our ranking of the fastest VPN in 2026. Amazing device compatibility and consistently stable and reliable performance on iOS and Android are some of its highlights, solidifying this VPN’s first place on the podium.

NordVPN’s 10 simultaneous connections are welcome, and 24/7 live chat support helps to fix VPN-related issues easily (as if they ever happen with NordVPN). Simultaneously, NordVPN is a wallet-friendly VPN that also happens to be fast and reliable. You can get it for $3 monthly and enjoy a 30-day money-back guarantee.

2. ExpressVPN: High-Speed VPN With Easy-to-Use Apps

Pros

  • Easy-to-use apps
  • Stable performance
  • Works with Netflix
  • Robust security
  • Affordable prices

Cons

  • Light on features
  • Higher renewal cost

ExpressVPN was the fastest VPN until NordVPN caught up to it. Its performance is very close to our #1-rated fast VPN, so we can’t complain. That’s because of ExpressVPN’s state-of-the-art Lightway Turbo protocol. ExpressVPN’s UDP and TCP variants of this protocol provide fast and stable performance.

Japan 206.33 Mbps 16.73 Mbps 281 ms

✅ Features of ExpressVPN

Like NordVPN, it offers 10 Gbps servers in 105 countries, using its renowned TrustedServer technology, or more accurately, RAM servers. ExpressVPN doesn’t cap your bandwidth or data, so you can browse the internet limitlessly. Our tests discovered its impeccable performance for streaming and torrenting.

Watching Formula 1 live was a breeze; we could also watch content in Ultra HD on Netflix without buffering. More impressively, ExpressVPN’s upload speed is stable. It’s phenomenal for content creators who churn out daily content. ExpressVPN’s latency is reasonably low, making millions of worldwide gamers satisfied.

Of course, ExpressVPN’s other qualities will also be pointed out. It’s a no-log service with powerful GCM encryption, a kill switch, and Parental Control. It received multiple audits and acclaim from cybersecurity experts, putting it high on the pedestal. The price used to be an issue, but not anymore.

ExpressVPN’s Basic plan is about $2.44 per month, for two years, and with four free months. You also get a 30-day money-back guarantee in case you’re unsatisfied. However, our tests were pretty clear: It’s one of the top high-speed VPN options now.

3. Private Internet Access: Cheap & Secure Service

Pros

  • Unlimited devices
  • Stable and reliable
  • Streaming servers
  • Strong privacy
  • Low-cost 2-year plans

Cons

  • Occasional slowdowns
  • Confusing UI

Private Internet Access is a fast VPN service whose speed reduction is barely noticeable, but in our tests, it was slower than the first two. Is it slow? No, but it’s not the world’s fastest VPN either. During tests, it performed well for streaming, torrenting, and gaming sessions (it’s a good VPN for Black Ops 7).

⚡ VPN Speed Test Results

Server Location ⬇️ Download ⬆️ Upload ⏱️ Latency
Base (Serbia) 342.59 Mbps 19.65 Mbps 10 ms
UK 298.69 Mbps 17.42 Mbps 42 ms
US 261.93 Mbps 12.84 Mbps 129 ms
Japan 197.89 Mbps 14.31 Mbps 292 ms

Visit Private Internet Access

✅ Features of Private Internet Access

The experience was buttery-smooth. Private Internet Access has one notable advantage – the server fleet. It packs 30,000+ servers in nearly 100 countries. This eliminates overcrowding and lets you discover a fast VPN server in seconds. Its servers also have latency information, so you can decide on the server more quickly.

Private Internet Access has port forwarding, known to speed up P2P performance. Thanks to its fast VPN speeds, you can use it in combination with Tor to explore the dark web and avoid Tor’s sluggishness. PIA is mostly used for security and privacy, and it shines in this regard, more so than its speed and raw performance.

Apart from a no-log policy, it includes advanced tools like Shadowsocks, SOCKS5, MultiHop, PIA MACE (ad blocker), and dedicated IP addresses. Private Internet Access works on all devices like other fast VPN services. However, it has unlimited simultaneous connections, making it superior to some competitors.

All this comes at a silly price of about $2.19 per month, or even $2.03 per month in specific promotions and times of the year. Rest assured, you have 30 days to test it and be refunded if you don’t like it or no longer need it.

4. Surfshark: Best Fast VPN for Multiple Devices

Surfshark Vpn Apps
© Gizmodo.com

Pros

  • Unlimited devices
  • Virus protection
  • Impressively fast
  • Traffic obfuscation

Cons

  • Takes longer to connect
  • No free plan

Surfshark improved upon its previous slow performance to deliver 250+ Mbps speeds for an amazing experience (to remind you, our baseline is ~342 Mbps). This improvement can be attributed to WireGuard. It’s the fastest VPN protocol, emphasizing stability, reliability, and performance. Surfshark also has 10 Gbps servers.

⚡ VPN Speed Test Results

Server Location ⬇️ Download ⬆️ Upload ⏱️ Latency
Base (Serbia) 342.59 Mbps 19.65 Mbps 10 ms
UK 306.48 Mbps 16.97 Mbps 42 ms
US 253.79 Mbps 12.47 Mbps 118 ms
Japan 191.07 Mbps 10.90 Mbps 288 ms

Visit Surfshark

✅ Features of Surfshark

All are based on RAM and in 100+ countries. Some, like those in Amsterdam, have 40 Gbps ports for even faster speeds. Surfshark uses AES-256 encryption for a perfect blend of speed and security. All this makes Surfshark a VPN with great speeds for all purposes. We discovered it can also be used to watch Netflix; 30+ catalogs at that.

Surfshark offers obfuscation with NoBorders, which bypasses censorship in China and other similar countries. During this process, the performance remains rock-solid. Surfshark’s unlimited bandwidth is great for torrenting or playing games, and unlimited simultaneous connections provide multi-device protection.

This VPN includes many exciting features. One is an antivirus that works round-the-clock and removes dangerous threats. Then, there’s Search, a browser without tracking. Other tools include split tunneling, a kill switch, IP rotation, and static IP addresses. Surfshark can be yours for cheap if you grab a discount below.

We recommend its 2-year Starter plan with an ironclad 30-day money-back guarantee for a risk-free purchase and testing. It’s about $1.88 per month, making this one of the cheapest fast VPNs in 2026.

5. CyberGhost: Best for Streaming & P2P

Cyberghost Apps
© Gizmodo.com

Pros

  • WireGuard for speed
  • Dedicated IP addresses
  • Comprehensive security
  • Smart DNS service

Cons

  • Limited to 7 devices
  • No obfuscation

CyberGhost takes the fifth spot, but saying its performance is bad would be a lie. Despite its affordable prices, CyberGhost is still among the fastest VPN services in 2026, with speeds reaching 200+ Mbps. Its latency is also quite low. We tested all VPNs with WireGuard, but our switch to OpenVPN revealed CyberGhost’s slower side.

⚡ VPN Speed Test Results

Server Location ⬇️ Download ⬆️ Upload ⏱️ Latency
Base (Serbia) 342.59 Mbps 19.65 Mbps 10 ms
UK 243.07 Mbps 18.55 Mbps 46 ms
US 190.96 Mbps 18.25 Mbps 116 ms
Japan 161.22 Mbps 12.87 Mbps 288 ms

Visit CyberGhost

✅ Features of CyberGhost

That’s the reason behind its placement. Regardless, the VPN offers unlimited bandwidth and RAM servers, making it fairly reliable. It also has 12,000 servers worldwide, in more than 100 countries. CyberGhost is famous for its solid streaming and torrenting optimization, where the VPN has no issues whatsoever.

CyberGhost’s dedicated IPs in 20+ locations are impressive. Another point is SmartDNS, which was also fast in our tests, allowing us to unblock a myriad of streaming platforms. Its security never took a beating, and as a Romanian service, it enjoys the privileges of residing in a privacy-friendly jurisdiction.

This translates to a no-log policy and extreme privacy practices. CyberGhost has industry-standard AES-256-bit encryption and IPv6 leak protection for data security. While it works on all systems, it supports only seven simultaneous connections. This is compensated by its cheap biennial plan at $2.19 per month.

CyberGhost also has a generous 45-day refund policy, which you won’t find in other fastest VPN options on this list. If you’re interested, find out more about it in our CyberGhost test or immediately try it risk-free below.

6. Proton VPN: Built for Privacy & Security

Proton Vpn Apps
© Gizmodo.com

Pros

  • Optional free plan
  • Wide server network
  • Strong privacy pedigree
  • P2P-optimized

Cons

  • No Smart DNS
  • Subpar customer support

Proton VPN is known for its solid performance. Our VPN speed tests showed excellent speeds, except for the UK server, which performed the worst despite being the closest to us. Fortunately, Proton remains stable enough. Having tested Proton VPN, it was decent for Full HD streaming and occasional gaming.

⚡ VPN Speed Test Results

Server Location ⬇️ Download ⬆️ Upload ⏱️ Latency
Base (Serbia) 342.59 Mbps 19.65 Mbps 10 ms
UK 195.66 Mbps 18.47 Mbps 47 ms
US 260.69 Mbps 11.56 Mbps 129 ms
Japan 119.74 Mbps 16.21 Mbps 316 ms

Visit Proton VPN

✅ Features of Proton VPN

Thanks to torrenting servers, P2P file sharing won’t be an issue either. Proton VPN has ample servers in over 134 countries for top speeds. With so many servers and up to 22+ Gbps of network capacity, Proton VPN delivers on connection reliability. One thing to note is that its Secure Core servers are excellent for privacy.

However, this comes at a cost of speed due to amplified encryption. On the other hand, Proton VPN is great for privacy and security thanks to its Swiss roots. This fast VPN includes a NetShield ad blocker and port forwarding, neither of which will be found in underwhelming, free-to-use VPN services.

On that note, Proton VPN has a free version with ten server locations and unlimited data. However, this version’s VPN speeds are poor and won’t satisfy your needs. We left Proton VPN for last because of its lack of SmartDNS and fairly average customer service in comparison to other options.

The good news is that it’s inexpensive, and its price goes from $3 to $3.59 per month, based on the current promotion and discount. For reference, it’s close to NordVPN and ExpressVPN, with whom it compares pretty well.

Is a Free VPN Fast Enough? Shocking Truth

There are many differences between free and paid VPNs. The most glaring is data restriction. Many free providers offer unlimited data, and that’s commendable. But that comes at a cost of slow speeds. After testing a heap of free VPNs, we found that their speeds can be more than 70% slower in comparison.

This is reflected in the core experience that suffers. We’ll take Proton VPN’s free version as a great example. You’ll immediately notice an increase in latency, as pages load slower and games become glitchy. Enabling 4K on YouTube also stresses the entire system, as it tries to push itself enough to load the video properly.

That’s not only Proton VPN’s fault. It’s the same with Hola VPN, Hide.me, Windscribe, Turbo VPN, Hotspot Shield, and others. We’re sure these names ring many bells, but sadly, they’re not as good as advertised. We found that only a handful of free VPNs are fast enough, and PrivadoVPN was one.

With speeds over 200 Mbps, it’s very respectable but comes with a cardinal downside of limited monthly data of just 10 GB. To put it simply, don’t expect the fastest VPN to be free. Having a fast VPN means investing in servers, modern protocols, software optimization, and so forth. Only the top-tier VPNs can achieve this.

This is why they charge for their subscriptions; it’s a two-way street.

Why is Speed & Performance Important?

We can answer this question with another question:

Why is a fast internet connection so important to you?

Got your answer? If not, let us explain why using the fastest VPN is important for most people. VPNs, theoretically, can slow down your connection. This happens because of encryption, server distance, and a few other factors. This is why you want a potent VPN. To minimize the speed loss and get a smooth experience.

We noticed that people value security and privacy, but not at the severe cost of speed and performance. That’s unforgivable. After all, having a fast VPN lets you watch movies on Netflix or stream BBC iPlayer with no buffering. Torrenting is also vital because you don’t want to wait hours for the download to finish.

What about gaming? That’s where speed comes into play. You want low latency and reliable speeds to avoid glitches and lagging. Even general browsing is irritating if the VPN isn’t fast. Some people also value upload performance. Content creators and people who use cloud services benefit from a VPN that performs well.

⭐ As you can see, fast providers are important in many fields of work and entertainment, explaining why many prioritize this factor over anything else, even including security and privacy features.

Conclusion

With the six fastest VPN options we presented, you have a clear overview to make the decision. Our choice would undoubtedly be NordVPN and it’s clear why. This VPN performs exceptionally well, but above all, it costs very little. Plus, you get a slew of advanced security features that make it well-worth the money.

If you’d rather explore other options, ExpressVPN is the second-best pick, with almost as impressive speeds and security. Affordable picks like Private Internet Access, Surfshark, and CyberGhost are no slouches either. PIA and Surfshark are especially impressive due to their unlimited simultaneous connections.

Proton is sort of a bonus pick, excelling at performance, streaming, and P2P prowess at a not-so-high price. That’s enough for today – go ahead and pick your preferred service. You have ample options.
