The Atlantic has the story on X Prize competition to reach the Challenger Deep, the deepest known point in the world at 35,797 feet. Three teams are racing to get the $10 million award.

Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard first reached Challenger Deep more than 50 years ago. This time the three new Captain Nemos are Sir Richard Branson, James Cameron, and Bruce Jones.

Branson and Cameron, both wealthy adventurers with the balls do pull off a feat like this, surprise no one with their intentions of reaching the deep. We’ve even seen the flying submarine Branson will be using to get there. Bruce Jones is the wild card, as he doesn’t quite have the funds for the expedition. But I like a dark horse in any race. I can’t wait to see what these guys will find. [The Atlantic]
