Kim Pimmel is no stranger to time-lapse photography. In his latest video, the versatile San Francisco filmmaker pits ferrofluid and food coloring in a pulsating race across an expanse of soap suds.

Pimmel set up the shot by placing a magnet in the center of a dish filled with normal soap bubbles and some exotic ferrofluid at the edge. Using a Nikon D90, macro lenses and slick time lapse techniques, he captured the ferrofluid as it was pulled towards the magnet and the food coloring as it spread due to capillary action.
