Amazon’s October Prime Day event ends tonight, and the discount on Apple’s thin laptop ends with it. Until then, the 2026 MacBook Air 13-inch with the M5 chip is $1,099 on Amazon, down from $1,299, in the configuration with 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD. That leaves one evening to decide on a laptop most people keep for years, so here is what the money buys.
M5 Inside, 18 Hours on a Charge
The M5 is the newest chip in Apple’s thin laptop, with a faster processor than its predecessor and a graphics unit that includes what Apple calls Neural Accelerators. Together with the Neural Engine, they are meant to run AI features on the machine itself, and Apple Intelligence uses them for writing help and everyday tasks, with privacy protections the company says keep your data out of reach, including its own. Leaving the acronyms aside, 16GB of unified memory is the figure I’d look at first: it is what keeps forty browser tabs, a video call and a photo editor running together without the system slowing down.
Battery life is quoted at up to 18 hours, a number that carries Apple’s usual asterisk and still translates into a full day of lectures or a transatlantic flight with a film to spare. Apple pitches this model at students, which is fair, though the same qualities suit anyone who works from trains, kitchens and airport gates. The charger can stay in the bag most days, and that changes how a laptop gets used more than any benchmark does.
The screen is a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina panel that displays a billion colors, with text sharp enough for long reading sessions. Above it sits a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, which reframes the image to keep you in shot when you move during a call, and can show a top-down view of the desk in front of the keyboard. Sound comes from four speakers with Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos support, and three microphones handle your voice. For a machine this thin, video calls and evening films are both well served.
Connections are limited but well chosen. There are two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a headphone jack and a MagSafe charging port, which leaves both Thunderbolt ports free while the laptop is plugged in. Up to two external displays are supported, and Apple’s N1 chip brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The listing mentions neither an HDMI port nor a card reader, so photographers and people who present often should plan for an adapter. Storage is the other point to weigh, because the 1TB version costs $1,399 on the same page. I’d keep the 512GB model and add an external drive for archives.
