Gizmodo Is Hiring an Editor-in-Chief

GIZMODO USA is looking for an Editor-in-Chief to lead and grow Gizmodo.com, one of the Internet’s most-read websites covering technology, science, and entertainment. This position reports to the Managing Director.

The ideal candidate is a strong leader with substantial editing, reporting, and organizational skills. The Gizmodo Editor-in-Chief will lead a team of about 20 writers and editors. You’ll help young journalists launch their careers and guide experienced journalists to reach their full potential. You should love tech, gadgets, culture, and science and have a vision for how Gizmodo can reach new audiences and attract more loyal, long-term readers.

Gizmodo was founded in 2002 and today reaches a global audience of more than 12 million.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Define and lead Gizmodo’s editorial vision across all platforms, ensuring a strong, differentiated voice and high-quality coverage across Tech News, io9, Consumer Tech, and Science
  • Set editorial standards and drive innovation in storytelling, formats, and content strategy to grow audience relevance and authority in tech journalism
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a newsroom of ~20 journalists and editors, fostering a high-performance, collaborative, and inclusive culture
  • Recruit and develop editorial talent while overseeing performance management, team structure, and day-to-day newsroom operations
  • Drive audience growth across traffic, engagement, loyal readership, and newsletters while strengthening Gizmodo’s industry reputation and external presence
  • Build and maintain strong industry relationships to support exclusive reporting, partnerships, and thought leadership opportunities
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product and commercial teams to align editorial initiatives with broader business and platform goals
  • Oversee editorial operations and budget management, including staffing, freelance resources, workflows, publishing cadence, and long-term organizational planning alongside leadership teams

Qualifications:

  • Strong leadership skills with experience of managing a team of journalists in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment (at least 3 years in a senior editorial leadership role managing a team in a digital newsroom)
  • First-rate editorial judgment and editorial skills
  • A passion for technology and broad knowledge of the tech industry
  • Ability to generate original ideas for creative and engaging content
  • Demonstrable interpersonal skills with the ability to manage, motivate, and mentor a diverse team
  • Strong collaborative skills, including experience working with stakeholders across an organization
  • Strong professional network across the technology industry — engineers, product leads, investors, researchers, press teams

This role is based in our NYC office. The expected salary range is $130,000 to $175,000 + bonus, depending on the candidate’s profile.
