Some Blu-Ray Thoughts

By

Reading time 1 minute

Toshiba, supporter of HD DVD, has been starting some static about the HD/Blu-Ray wars that seem never to end. Toshiba, it seems, thinks Blu-Ray is daid as a doornail and is already massing HD DVD troops at the high-def border. Very North/South Korea.

With the announcement of the PS3, however, I’m going to say something that people will probably laugh at me for down the line—I believe Blu-Ray will win this one meaning that Sony, for once in its long, long life, has created a consumer standard that will stick. But they will have to play their cards right and license the tech to every OEM from here to Taiwan simply because if someone, anyone, dumps a free HD disk standard into the swimming pool then that’s the way the fish will swim. If it costs me, a manufacturer, 3 cents to burn a Blu-Ray disk and 1 cent to burn an HD DVD disk, Blu-Ray is toast. Be careful, Sony.
