TomTomGo Contest: Gizmodo Takes a Trip

By

Reading time 2 minutes

We’re going to drive around with the TomTomGo this weekend—the same one we’re going to give away, so you better hope I don’t get angry and kick it—and will post up a some hints about of where we’ve been. Then, once our trip is over Sunday, you can send an email to our Gmail account (which is this site’s name at gmail) with your guess to our exact distance of our trip, down to the 1/10th of a mile, in the subject. Whoever gets closest to our total mileage wins the TomTomGo!

And as usual, in the case of duplicate winning answers, we just sell the prize and buy our friends a round of drinks (or we, more likely, we have our lovely assistant randomly choose from the pool).

Not bad, huh? We’ll be posting through the weekend with updates and clues. Most of the locations will be pretty obvious, but we might throw in a few tricksy bits to mess with your mind.

And now, the fine print:

This contest is fully sponsored by TomTomGo, producers of the all-in-one car navigator. For more information on the world’s most user-friendly GPS, visit TomTomGo.

Well, we didn’t quite manage to get any clues posted yesterday, as cell phone service—let alone internet—was in short supply. No matter—start sending in your guesses today.

As for the mileage guess itself, I reset the trip meter from Brooklyn in my excitement, so we’ll start the contest from The Original Pancake House in New Jersey (the city is yours to guess). From there we travelled to the small town that held La Petite Provence, a gut-busting bakery and pastry shop. After spending the night in the local diabetes ward, we travelled back to Brooklyn, stopping only to visit a local mining museum—yes, we are totally extreme.

To enter to win the TomTomGo we used to navigate on our trip, send a single email (duplicates will be nuked) to our Gmail address (this site at gmail.com) with the subject, “TomTomGo: x miles.” Be sure to put in 1/10th of miles in your guess as well—if we get duplicate correct answers, we’ll just do a random selection from those of the winner. Good luck!

I’m very pleased to announce that Steve Mathews hit the nail right on the head at 132.9 miles. Lots of you got really close—your tracking skills are better than I suspected—but nobody else had that exact guess (well, except the spammer, but despite not specifically disclaiming multiple entries, I’m nixing him by executive privilege). Thanks to everyone who sent in a guess, and thanks to TomTom for sponsoring it. I’ll try to get it sent out before the holidays, Steve. I might even wipe my finger grease off of it.
