Verizon bought MCI for $8.5 billion today, snatching the telecomm out from under Qwest after 10 weeks of negotiation.
MCI is best known for its long-distance service as well as its big business and government contracts, giving Verizon a leg up when it comes to pitching service to larger clients. It means very little to us consumers unless we need someone to yell at—namely the “Can You Hear Me Now?” guy— when the phones at work aren’t up. Another plus? Verizon will cut about 7,000 jobs at MCI. Wait, that’s not a plus.
