Seasonal Affective Disorder, or winter depression, or "where the hell is the Sun," can be treated by gadgets that mimic the sunlight you're otherwise not getting. The special name for these gadgets is "lamps," or "lights" if you're going strictly scientific. The crazy dames over at Shiny Shiny reviewed two of them and decided (I think) that the lights are great, but using the alarm function to wake up to frogs or static is "rubbish." [Shiny Shiny]

How ironic that a behavioral disorder that affects mood is named SAD. Who came up with that one? Was it the same writing staff that also brought us Darma and Greg?
.@Johnny Chimpo: You can thank the APA for that one and the writers of the DSMIV TR. And its actually not the brightness of the lights that matters its the wavelengths that overcome seasonal affect.
"faaaarted" :)
Those girls were cuter when the lights were turned off.
They seem to go on and on....
Oh, I get it, they put you to sleep and the lamp wakes you up.
OK I realize that I might look like a dork because I need SAD lights in the winter, but I'm gonna chime in. These dames say the lights are "great", but I personally prefer the more "gadgety" Golite. Portable, rechargeable battery, cheaper, 'nuff said.
I thought it was kinda funny how they're british and are reviewing a sun type device. I never saw they sun in England ever. Maybe it's just me.
I just bought my wife the newest GoLite, and I would say it's been effective with her. We just had our first child and with her staying at home breastfeeding all the time, she was getting a little...cagey. Now she uses the GoLite in the mornings when she feeds, and she's much less tense at the end of the day.
Money well spent, imo.
How about the Verilux SAD lights? They have a small, portable, full-spectrum one that's quite cost-effective and also looks cool, and a larger one.
I use the regular Verilux lights; they help the room seem brighter, like sunlight, and help with eyes that ache. I highly recommend them. I'm thinking about purchasing a verilux SAD lamp, myself.
I have one of these: [www.lighttherapyproducts.com] though I don't have S.A.D. It's just the best possible work light imaginable for electronics and other hobbies.
@raindew01: Wow, that's a shill if I've ever seen one. See what I started?
I don't think the purpose of [www.Ott-Lite.com] is related to seasonal affective disorder, but I have one of their "TrueColor" lamps and I'm really impressed by it. Initially, I bought it to enhance the lighting when I'm working on various crafts, but I find myself using it quite a bit for other tasks too. I used to want some sort of therapy light and I'm satisfied that this does the trick. I found my little lamp at [www.Michaels.com] craft store and plan to get a second one.
did the chick on the left say her lamp got stolen? Because towards the end of it she said she had one of those already. hrm..
I've got one made by the bodyclock guys, which I've had for ages. [www.shinyshiny.tv]
Those review ones were the ones that kept getting pinched by staff.
I've had SAD for years, but didn't find out about these lights until last year. But there was NO WAY I was gonna drop the kind of cash they wanted for these things, so I built my own out of an old clock, a lamp, a wall dimmer switch, and a 3.5" floppy drive (alarm from the clock drives the stepper motor on the floppy which slowly moves the dimmer knob making the light gradually brighter- instant sunrise!)(well, not instant- that's kinda the point...)
one could also move to a warmer climate that tends to have sun more often than not_
