@Y2KGTP: Except on TeeeeeeeVeeeee, the whole drive deletes in a matter of seconds, or as long as it takes for something dramatic to happen. If that was true, I'd smash my window and yell "Dammit!" like Jack Bauer to get faster than 7200 RPM disk action. But then there's always the maverick geek who goes, "Duh! They didn't zero the drive! I'll use Data Rescue to unerase the files!" and the vital clues are found. Actually, they don't mention zeroing, since TeeeeeVeeee assumes you are too stupid to know what that means and they won't waste Jack's ticking clock to tell you. Those are precious seconds where a new character could be scowling on a split screen while somebody is being tortured or blown up.

obviously you didnt read the story adam. It isnt if you move it at all, it is if you move the laptop from its designated area. Like a room or building.

ok i RTFA, seems to me as long as you took it somewhere without wireless signal, or encased in an F-Cage, it wouldn't be able to tell whether or not it had been moved.

if your router goes out, and it loses wifi signal, will it think it's been moved?

cuz that would suck, like if say, the power goes out.

It's nice that it can take discreet mugshots and mail them to you though. I'm sure you can disable the self-destruct feature. After all even if you kept the laptop in place but moved the router wouldn't that be disastrous too?

I'd rather have a GPS device installed in my gear... Not something that takes mug-shots, needs the inter-tubes to send alerts, etc. I want the ability to track some bastards down if my stuff ever got stolen.

A better idea would be making a device that destroys your data if it leaves an x miles/meters/feet radius.
