Sending Too Many SMS Messages Means You Have a Mental Disorder

The same doctor that was pushing for internet addiction to be classified as an official mental disorder has now published an article in the latest American Journal of Psychiatry stating that sending a large amount of SMS messages will qualify as well. Not only that, it seems that Jerald Block is throwing in too much computer gaming in the mental disorder pile too. What do you and your BFF Jill think? Is too much SMSing something you need to get professional help to quit, as evidenced by the findings that "people who are denied access to the internet or mobile phones displayed feelings of anger, tension, and/or depression?" • Am I the one that only cares about this story only because of the images tagged to it?

  • ummm... isn't it bad to put cellphones in water?

  • @AceKicker: nope!

  • Definitly. It's also known as obsession, and nothing good ever comes out of that. Unless the world is coming to an end, there is no reason for someone to be constantly texting. If your sitting on the john, or taking a bath like the sexy babe up there, or sleeping with your cellphone like my roomate does, then you know you need to take it down a notch. And if you can't, then you know you have a problem, because lives don't run on Cell phones.

I find it scary how people (usually ditzy preps) are so into their cellphones. And even more scared of how they can think of random useless shit to chat about.

This isn't realistic. How about some fat bald guy using his blackberry in the tub? Oh the light hurts when I shine the magnifying glass on myself....

  • Addictive personalities can and will get addicted to anything. I think I have an internet problem, not ready to do anything about it yet, but it is a real issue. Besides, if I did do something, Giz would suffer a huge ad revenue loss ;)

  • @AceKicker:
    There's a story?

  • Think she's from one of those "if you want to txt hot chicks send a message to..." ads?

  • Image of tamoko tamoko at 02:54 PM on 03/31/08 *

@redrabbit: Agreed on all counts... I have several acquaintances that totally exhibit OCD texting behavior.

People, just call the lazy bastards already. I text shit, you text shit, but these people are glued to the damn things; and their "conversations" are as substantial as a box of donut holes from Dunk'in Donuts.

These are also the same people who always seem shocked thay have an addition $175 in text charges heaped on top of their regular plan - unless they were actually sharp enough to go for the unlimited texting option.

  • i applaud the gratuitous and unnecessary use of that picture. bravo, you magnificent bastard. bravo.

  • @AceKicker: on another note whoever
is it at Giz who choses the pics for the stories, I tip my hat to you sir/madam.

@PeteUALaw: When your a hot asian chick, you don't need to be smart...

Every time more than 2 people do something it gets classified as two things; an addiction, and a disorder. Nobody cares, everything is addictive and no one is normal. Having a list of recognized diseases is pointless.

  • Can I get a medical marijuana script for these.. uh.. disorders?

  • @redrabbit: A rant about obsessed people from someone posting a comment on Gizmodo. Pot, meet Kettle.

  • I hate to be one of "those guys", but she's FAFH!

  • "people who are denied access to the internet or mobile phones displayed feelings of anger, tension, and/or depression?"

    or.. boredom?

  • @Darrone: +1

"people who are denied access to the internet or mobile phones displayed feelings of anger, tension, and/or depression?"
Yeah, but I get the same feelings when I'm denied ANYTHING I want. Getting angry because you don't get what you want doesn't automatically make you addicted, just spoiled like the rest of the world.
Instead of diagnosing people with addiction, try just tattooing "shit happens" inside their eyelids.

  • I think they should add obnoxious tanning to mental disorders too.

Oh wait, no, that's supposedly making you look healthy.

  • omg! wtf? plz, IDTS! w/e, idc. idk bout every1 else, but im sane, tyvm. k, g2g, ttyl, txt bck!

  • Anyone else strangely turned-on by a hot asian girl texting on a cell phone in the water? Folks, I think we've found a new fetish.

  • I completely agree with PeteUALaw..... (the Asian Chick, and the comment on addiction). Yes, this is addictive behavior... But that's truely what humans are programmed for! We WILL find something to get addicted to. Just because your personal 'addiction' might not be listed in the DSM-IV yet doesn't mean that it is any 'less' an addiction than opiates, alcohol, cigs, food, sex, love, etc.... It's all about that dopamine reward pathway in the brain.... You're already programmed to do whatever your brain wants you to do in order to keep that pathway activated.... The folks who aren't addicted to something are the REAL problem. They're denying their human nature.... Just look at what happens to a man that denies himself sex for years.... They end up going after kids or start holy wars! All the negative hype that comes out of the drug wars is because you have a government denying access and putting negative spin on things. Heroin was used medicinally for years...as were drugs like LSD, cocaine (still is), and MDMA.... If the gobment was making money off of it, then it would be a different story... Just so happens they can with text messaging, so that's not a disorder 'yet.... though I'm sure the alterior motive of this psychologist is to figure out a way to get paid by insurance companies to 'break' people of their text habit.

Just look at the ridiculous idea of Methadone clinics. We'll get you off the 'hard sh*t' and put you on the hardest sh*t out there....and we'll call it 'treatment' and everyone will be happy it....come on!...babble, babble

  • I have yellow fever

  • @PeteUALaw: The cord on the blow dryer wasn't long enough so they just used what had. Too bad it didn't work.

  • hum...I think she's marketing the new Casio GZone phone...er oh hey she cute BTW. ; )

  • @Slartibartfast:
    For some IS an addiction.
Last time I was in Shanghai our company translator (a sweet girl like in the picture) was SMSing about 10 ~ 15 times per hour to friends and such about fashion, food, movies, etc...
I was so anoying, it looked right down weird. When I asked her, she said she was doing it because it was quicker than talking on the phone.

If you ask me, I think she did it because is less noticeable that chatting on the phone, so you cound SMS all day and not work because SMS is silent.

Pretty much like having a browser window behind some Excel file so it looks like you are working... (while reading Gizmodo).

Addition... maybe... she had the phone in hand at all times.... realy anoying.

  • Too much of ANYTHING isn't good for you.. not matter what it is.... too much water or oxygen can even kill you.

  • @BlindKarma: well it certainly doesnt looks like she is as happy as in picture numero uno. maybe the second picture should have a caption like... OMG I'm screwed now, my txts are gone and my phone died! Oh well... at least I still look hot siting in the tub. :)

  • When in the restroom in our office you can often hear people using their BlackBerry while using the facilities. Is that addiction, stupidity, or just a standard daily bathroom surfing competition? Hard to say, but there does appear to be something wrong with folks that can not take ten minutes out of their day to relieve themselves without using a gadget.

  • i know some people who don't have internet in their homes or know how to send a text message. they're called old people and I've also heard the referred to as "lame."

  • Image of nutbastard nutbastard at 04:14 PM on 03/31/08 *

I know some people - youngsters, mostly - who text constantly. I have to wonder, damn, are you that insecure/starved for attention? I cherish every moment of the day where im NOT interacting with other people. Of course, maybe that means i have a mental illness diametrically opposed to this one, but at least mine isn't costing me/other people 10 cents every 5 minutes.

Dont even get me started on the MMS addicts. NOBODY CARES ABOUT A LOW RES 30 CLIP OF SOME DOG YOU SAW AT THE SUPERMARKET!

  • Image of DeadWriter DeadWriter at 04:19 PM on 03/31/08 *

I think that the big push to get it into the DSM is to allow people to get treatment that is covered by health care. Some people have problems with this. I send around 20 TXT messages a month, usually because I refuse to talk to anybody when I am in public.

  • @nutbastard: it just means you're a sociopath, it's not anything to get worked up about ;)

@Monty: reminds me of a Jeff Foxworthy joke about how the hotel suite he stayed at in Las Vegas one time had two phone lines in the bathroom by the toilet.
One's just about understandable but who needs to be able to put a person on hold and take a second call whilst on the loo?

  • Oh please! readers and whoever posted this pictures tell us where we can see more of this beauty.

    I think I'm in love!!!!

  • @getz76:

Is your statement supposed to contain some sort of sarcastic irony? Because it fails. And the issue about the obsession with Cell phones is irrelevent to my "rant". And I'm guessing that you are one of these people who is obsessed with their cell phone as well.

  • Image of nutbastard nutbastard at 04:30 PM on 03/31/08 *

    @Step666:
Ok, cool, but im still concerned as to why my purple sounds odorous when i swim through the walls....

  • @nutbastard:
I don't think it's being starved for attention, but people definitely have a fear of being alone because they don't want to hear themselves think. This just gives them another convenient avenue to babble about nothing and keep the voices at bay.

  • @nutbastard: BTW I just MMSed you a pic of a family of ducks I saw crossing the road. How cute! LOL

  • Image of nutbastard nutbastard at 04:36 PM on 03/31/08 *

    @getz76:
doesn't really work, considering he's only got like 10 posts ever...

  • Image of nutbastard nutbastard at 04:38 PM on 03/31/08 *

    @kaneshadow:
LOL, LOL... you won't be LOL when i rip your texting thumb off, no, you'll be ROFB to death.

    : )

  • Crapoo, she's back! (at least sans caption this time)

  • @PeteUALaw:
that is the first thing i noticed.... well maybe the second

"but people definitely have a fear of being alone because they don't want to hear themselves think."

how bizarre! pretty much my thoughts are the only ones i want to hear, since the rest of humanity is, you know, obviously dumber/less interesting than i am. Not to sound arrogant or anything, i just calls em how i see's em.

  • Image of 92BuickLeSabre 92BuickLeSabre at 04:52 PM on 03/31/08 *

@nutbastard: Can you really ROFB to death from a ripped-off thumb?

I guess there's only one way to find out.

  • @IrisMR: Yes, tanning is a serious problem.

It's like people think it's hot, but it really isn't and doing it on purpose is stupid.

  • @IrisMR, cyborgtroy - Exactly. Tanning on purpose is really ridiculous, especially when done in a bed indoors. If you're going to go somewhere where there's lots of sun and don't wanna burn, then I can understand wanting to start with a base tan. But getting all dark bronze via a bed or wasting lots of hours lying outside in the sun? No thanks.

  • Image of nutbastard nutbastard at 04:56 PM on 03/31/08 *

    @92BuickLeSabre:

yeah just tell em "don move, BRB w/prmedcs ASAP k?"

  • Jason Chen,

You were trying to tell me something weren't you? I just know it. There were apparently WORDS next to that incredible picture of a woman in a tub.

What were we talking about again?

  • Image of 92BuickLeSabre 92BuickLeSabre at 05:24 PM on 03/31/08 *

  • Yeah I don't ever text but I do get pissed when my parents turn off the modem. That's because they're doing it purposely though. If the power went out or something I'd be disappointed but not angry. Maybe if it was in the middle of a download or something but I can always st
