There is no doubt that many of us spend entirely too much time sitting in front of a computer each day. Naturally, this problem is even more acute for people who rely heavily on computers as part of their jobs. That having been said, the question is simple: how much time do you spend on a computer each day (on average)? Think of it as an Ironman competition for nerds.

I work on a computer.
Am I the only one for whom these polls never work? I vote 2-3 times and it never seems to take. Using FF.
In fact, im working right now. sorta.
Mine worked. It'll be interesting to see the results.
@peteH: same problem
Seriously? Not more 16 hours+? I live and breath computers.
CATHODE RAYED!!!
Are you sure he's dead? The coder in the next office looks like that on a good day.
oh, am I the only one who use computer for 16 hours?? is this bad??
@peteH: They never work for me either. FF also.
Polls never work for me either.
And my comments take like 5 refreshes to show, so i double post and look like a fucktard.
@peteH: I get the same thing on every browser I use. It does make one not even want to vote. =(
I'm on my computer from the moment I wake up to the time I go to bed. And does using the iphone to do a lot (besides making calls) count? I spent ample time on that device as well. Its my miniMac. =)
At least 12 hours, 3 of which being "productive".
If it wasn't for showering and driving the 1 mile to work each day, mine would be more than 16 hours.
I'm loving it though.. probably need to get out more.
My school issues us tablets, I'm definitely in the 16+ category.
at work, TOO MUCH. on xbox live, not enough.
I see most people are 11-12 hours like me... what about my time on the Xbox... that is in addition to the 11-12 hours
I'm using IE7 and sometimes the polls work and sometimes they don't. I guess the browsers are not to blame. It's whatever Giz is using to make them that is causing this annoying bug.
About 11 to 12 hours. But that's also because I'm a computer science student.
@Shai: "so i double post and look like a fucktard"
Will not take advantage of opportunity . .
Comments sometimes need to be pushed onto the page by another comment. So I'm told. Rule of thumb: Post once, trust in the buggy code, and all will be revealed.
Giz.... why , oh why am I having to vote more than once to get to the results... please fix your voting system!
On topic:
I'm sitting in front of my screen about 13-14 hours a day. Is that wrong...?
I guess a snappy comment about today's youth (and all you others as well) spending too much time online would be really stupid eh?
Like shooting myself in the foot.
Man, I should get out of here.
I fall in the 3 hour section..
I wonder where they found this picture of me resting at my computer after a long days work.
Between work and home, I easily spend upwards of 25 hours a day on the computer.
Fuck, I spend almost every waking hour on the computer.
@j4sk868: Mee too on the working/sorta thing... You can only stare @ tables and spreadsheets for so long....
@peteH: No I have the same problem.
@j4sk868: Me too
@iTarek: Nah you'll just have to pay a higher rate on the computer tax.
I try to limit it, but sometimes I find myself sitting in front of a computer after work and think "wasn't I just here?"
Really get sick of staring at my computer for 11-14 hour days at work (probably because I am mostly looking at Excel spreadsheets), but still end up hopping on a computer as soon as I get home to check emails and for generally entertaining purposes (since every frakkin thing is blocked at work)
If I'm not at school I'm on the computer so a lot of times I'm on for at least 12 hours of the day if not more.
about 9 hours a day at Work + 3 or so when I get home.
This is a very unfair question as most of use WORK on the computer. It should have been asked 'How often are you on the computer when you are not at work'. It doesn't help though, that I am powering my laptop up as I am walking in the door from work.
6 hours for me, a 5 1/2 of it is spent reading the Gawker sites. They're like my daily dose of drugs or something. I have Consumerist, Kotaku and Gizmodo bookmarked. I than click on each one for tabs, than I end up being interested in almost every topic so I click each one I'm interested in (usually producing about 40 tabs, more if I have posts from Defamer I'm interested in as well) and than I read through them and most of the comments. This can take about 4 hours sometimes because I'll be constantly checking for new posts after I'm done reading, and then read those too. I'm obsessed, and might be one of the biggest Gawker fans out there, giving you guys around 60 hits a day or more.
"Naturally, this problem is even more acute for people who rely heavily on computers as part of their jobs." I should just not comment... he put that right there.
Today's my day off, and I'm not sure whether to be proud or ashamed of the fact that I slept until 1 and have been surfing the net since I woke up (and still am in bed).
Depends on the day of the week.
Monday, about 8-10, Tuesday to Friday a bit less, maybe 6-7.
Weekends usually see me on the computer a lot, because I need to get the work done that I couldn't during the week. Maybe 12.
I can't answer this, I just don't know.
It depends whether I'm working or not.
If I'm at work, then maybe 2-3 hours max. If I'm not, then it depends what I'm doing on my day off - some days, like today, are just kind of spent vegetating round the house, in which case I spend a lot of time on my computer, but if I go out for the day, it can quite often be even less than if I was at work.
These are all the amounts of time spent on my own computer because, whilst there are computers at work, using them is an entirely different matter and it's just not comparable.
I am president of a software dev company, so I have my laptop permanently attached to my lap.
I'm on quite a bit, both at home and at work.
If I'm gaming quite a bit more.
All my various hobbies and activities tie into the net somehow it seems.
Love ya Gizmodo. :)
I went with 10 hours, because I basically sit down in front of my screen at 9am and stay there until about 6pm every single damn day (home officer). Then I usually come back later and get an hour of work done.
Before I was married, the number was closer to 16.
Yeah this is a biased poll if you sit in front of a computer all day long. My number will only change if I happen to be currently addicted to either an Xbox game (lower) or an MMO PC game (much much, sadly, much higher). Ah my misspent adulthood.
i have that same statue.
my g-ma bought it for me because she knows i work on computers and thinks computers ruins peoples lives.
@crucifix99: oh, you had one of the ones with the melting batteries?
Ouch...
@Mayor McRib: I totally relate, I'm on a computer usually around 12 to 14 hours a day and only work for about 3 to 4 of those hours...even when I'm at work!!!
When I'm at home and try to work, well that just never goes well to say the least.
I blame World of Warkrack
I refuse to answer this on the grounds that it depresses me.
@peteH:
They should change the poll to:
How many times do you submit your vote to our poll before it actually works?
13 - 15 hours a day easily. I'm an web interface designer and I work from the West Coast for a company on the East Coast in addition to maintaining a stable of freelance projects. Also, factor in the ProTools and music making time and sometimes we spiral upwards of 18 - 20 a day. Welcome to my world.
Far too much. Right now I'm doing evening shifts, so that's pretty much my day.
Today I woke up at noon, started my Eee next to me, did a quick scan of my blogs (Giz included), downloaded my paper (all digital, baby!), showered and dined (1 hour for both), then grabbed the Eee and surfed "leisurely" for another hour. Grabbed a bus, and while today I didn't, I usually either read my paper or a ebook, again on the Eee. Got to work at a quarter to 4, started the work PC, surfed some more and here I am 2 hours later on Giz. Probably going to keep myself occupied that way (or watching DVDs) on the computer until 11, where I'm going to go back home and get crackin' with Ubuntu 8.04 on my main laptop. Leisurely, of course
i work on computers and i admin a forum so im pretty much on all day when i'm not in class
