The OrbLive streaming media app is for everyone who is sick of waiting for a Sling Mobile client on their iPhone. As you may (or may not) know, Orb pulls files off your PC and streams them to any device with an app or web browser capable of accessing the Orb interface. From there you can stream music, video files, and if you have a TV tuner card, live TV. While Orb was previously accessible via Safari, this new, official app is supposed to be an easier, more intuitive way to get your media on the go. It does require a jailbroken iPhone, however. Check out the video of the client in action. [Orb via Register Hardware]

how does it stream? wont the PC and the iphone need to be on the same wifi network?
I mean how would I access my PC's content if i'm in another state?
My guess is some sort of RTSP Darwin streaming server is involved here. They are throwing a video stream from the tv input or a media file, at the streaming server, and then spitting back the URL to the client, or the web client previously.
Fun Stuff... will definitely be checking this out!
kpuri are u serious, its called the internet, look it up
Very cool. Most importantly, it's FREE!!!!
@kpuri:
I'm sure you can get it working outside your LAN, sorta like iPhone Remote streams music and video to your iPhone. Took me a while to get everything configured, but works great now, even though its a little slow over edge.
I put this on my iPod Touch last night, really cool app. I can even stream my PC webcam to the Touch.
Can't wait to get the new 3G iPhone when my Verizon contract expires in about a year or so....
it really pisses me of that they have had enough time to create a an application for the iphone, but not an app for mac so you can stream the stuff of your mac, its reallly bugging me
No Mac support, seriously?
its okay but I still prefer Toast Titanium 9 with the streaming software and you can still access it from any computer around the world.*
*As long as the host is on :O
@bdk184:
And iPhone too!! thats the key in this post.
Since windows media center encodes tv in MPEG-2 format, how is it that the iphone can display this video? I thought the iphone could only play MPEG-4 video files.
@ACoBildo: Seriously. I also can't believe that theres no mac support for this. I'll check out that iPhone Remote however, never heard of it....
Now if only Orb weren't a total bloated hog of an app that slows the host PC to a crawl.
@kpuri: [www.no-ip.com]
If you have a router, you just forward the port requests to your PC, which then must remain on (obviously).
The address you set up in no-ip, or any DDNS service allows you to enter in that address, which then just forwards to the IP of your home PC through your internet IP supplied by your provider.
wow, consider me very impressed. I'll give this a try this weekend.
Orb's awesome. Kind of frustrating though that they'll whip this out even before it's officially supported for the iPhone, yet the won't make a native app version for other mobile phones.
And as for Orb hogging resources. I agree, it's frustrating. I finally just limited it to utilize only one core on the CPU and that worked great for me.
Man. you have to have a tv tuner card to watch tv. I can only stream my movies and photos and music. I don't wanna pay $100 for a good tuner. I have a Dish Network HD set top box in my room. Idk how id get that signal in the tuner card unless I can get a coax cable coming outta the box in the tuner into my comp and still have my HD component feed to my tv to watch.
Comment on Native Orb App Brings Live TV to Your iPhone Why no support for mac!!!
Comment on Native Orb App Brings Live TV to Your iPhone Im using orb on vista with quad core 3.3ghz processor. Streaming live tv uses no more than 5% cpu utilization. If you are planning on streaming tv you must have a dual core 3 ghz system at least. Hopefully the 3g iphone will make streaming bearable as edge is simply too slow
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but you can also use it to browse your TV Programming Guide and set shows to record, that is if your computer has Media Center. I Think Orb works great, but the novelty of watching live streaming TV on your phone or whatever wears off pretty quick. It lasted about three days for me.
Comment on Native Orb App Brings Live TV to Your iPhone Sling player for iPhone? What about the good stuff, LocationFree? All the while my PSP has been collecting dust, I've been required to be in front of a TV to watch TV...what's up with that???
frickin sweet
it works awesome... a few bugs, like the volume control not working, also i added 3 drive letters to my videos, but when i click folders i see the drive letters but if i click that i dont see any videos or folders under the drive.
@diabolusunknown: only if the ip they give you is a public ip accessible from outside, some isps especially ones not in the US block inbound unsolicited access, and some dont even give out public ips
go jazz!
