$800 Stokke Xplory Stroller Hits NYC

I’m honored that Greg Allen of DaddyTypes.com wrote me an even longer, more explanatory description in email of the new $800 Stokke Xplory fashion stroller than he wrote on his own blog. And yes, I said $800 stroller. You know, for kids. To puke in. Anyway, I’ll just quote his dandy email after the jump and we can all marvel at the apparently burgeoning market for big ballin’ baby buggies.

Just got word that the Stokke Xplory, the new must-have eurostroller is coming to NYC. (I can’t believe I just typed that, and without getting a thin euro-dime from anyone. I feel so dirty.)

In case you don’t follow the high-end stroller arms race closely, a couple of years ago, the Dutch-designed Bugaboo showed up on Sex and The City, and it has since become about as ubiquitous as a $700+ stroller could be, especially on the UWS/UES. ($700 was about twice as expensive as the previous most expensive stroller, the Maclaren.)

Anyway, once that market was proved to exist, other expensive strollers have been popping up to chase it. The latest is the Stokke Xplory, from a quirky Norwegian childrens’ furniture company. It was designed to raise a kid up above car tailpipe-level and closer to his loving, materialistic parents. The shape ressembles a carseat perched on top of an IV stand. There are no giant storage bins, and no cupholders. Given that most Americans also use a stroller as a luggage/drink cart, the Xplory is, to say the least, a paradigm shift.

They went on sale in Europe in the spring, but Buy Buy Baby, the giant baby store in Chelsea, just got a demo model, and they’re taking names for the first shipment. $747 was what the guy quoted me, but another daddtypes.com reader was told $799.
