We have officially hit peak Star Wars. The Social Security Administration just published its annual tally of the most popular baby names in the U.S., and “Anakin” made the top 1,000. Squeaking in at #957 on the list, Darth Vader’s birth name was bestowed on 218 baby boys last year.
Why would people name their children after an infamous dark Jedi and slaughterer of younglings? Whether they were seduced by the dark side of the Force, only saw The Phantom Menace and didn’t know things take a bad turn later on, or just liked the sound of the name without knowing it was invented by George Lucas, little Noah, Liam, and Mason—the top three boys’ names—had better watch out for some Force-choking at daycare.
