Although calling it “underwater SMS” might be a little misleading, the underwater diving computers recently purchased by the Australian Navy from Nautronix sound extremely useful — and use sound to communicate. The Windows-based PCs use both GPS and sonar to track the position of the divers and underwater object, and can beam messages from one machine to another via acoustically powered network, not unlike a telephone modem. The manufacturer has a wide array of products designed to facilitate communication wireless underwater, where radio waves are often soaked up and diffused by the water.
