The prices of PC parts and accessories have gotten out of hand as of late. Especially since just the beginning of this year, we’ve seen huge price jumps across storage solutions, both internal and external. Cause for these price changes has been mostly attributed to the demand that AI data centers has for drives and memory, which means the average consumer is having to spend more than top dollar for parts that used to be available for a lot cheaper.
Prices fluctuate quite a bit, particularly when it comes to external drives. This Western Digital portable drive for instance has been hit with the kind of price hike we’re talking about. Last year, you would have been able to find it for between $60 to $80. But recently, it’s been listed at $165, more than double the value. It is however seeing a discount over at Amazon at the moment. It’s now 18% off, bringing the price down to $135. This is still incomparable to the prices of 2025 and earlier, but with storage parts across the board going up in price, those in need of more storage can’t be too picky. This might be the lowest price you’ll find it for awhile.
