The AOpen MVP Player does something that lots of other set-top boxes have done — display video and image files on your television — and given it a little twist, mainly by making the hard drive modular. That means instead of stringing network cable or setting up WiFi, you can take the hard drive enclosure (that takes 2.5-inch laptop drives) over to your PC and load it up with data over USB 2.0. It might not be the most elegant solution, but it’s certainly different, and that has to count for something. Plus it has memory card reader slot, presumably for copying data from those to the hard drive.
Trusted Reviews says the AOpen MVP Player is still a little rough around the edges, but it does do what it is designed to do well. Not a bad deal for around $160; although you’ll have to buy the hard drive yourself.
