I’m not 100% the picture is actually the right device (the manufacturer hasn’t updated their website), but Apricorn has a new 20GB external USB harddrive that’s main claim to fame is its ability to be powered off the USB bus instead of requiring a separate AC adapter. They’re using that fact, along with its relatively small size (4 x 3 0.6 inches) to compete against USB flash memory drives. And it is a bargain — Apricorn intends to start selling the 20GB version for around $200 and the 40GB version for about $280.

Update: So apparently, this isn’t as unique as they imply. Reader Sal Mineo sends word of an 80GB drive from Pockettec that is only slightly larger that is powered off the USB 2.0 bus alone, as well.
