What do you get when you combine a fear of gray goo with a proclivity for Ted Kaczynski-style terrorism? Radicals shipping mail bombs to university professors, that's what.
Last week, a professor at Mexico's Pachuca Polytechnic University sustained minor burns when a suspiciously heavy letter — originally intended for another faculty member — exploded while being opened according to a special security protocol. The attack has prompted university officials to call in security forces and install metal detectors and X-ray machines.
Mexican officials have yet to comment on whether the letter bomb is connected to similar attacks by a radical anti-nanotechnology group that occurred earlier this year, but it certainly fits their MO. We'll keep you posted as news on this latest mail bomb develops. [The Chronicle]
