BlackBerry OS 7 Update Brings Improved Browsing and Better Work/Life Management

RIM's next OS update for BlackBerrys has come earlier than expected, and brought along some cool new features that the Bold 9900/9930 will be using when they go on sale this summer. You can expect an improved browser thanks to Liquid Graphics and a Just In Time (JIT) Javascript engine, plus HTML5 support. Also: voice-activated searching, and a nifty new BlackBerry Balance feature that lets you use a handset for both work and personal reasons.

That last feature is sure to be a hit with many people, who often have to juggle a BlackBerry for work, as well as their personal phone. I know all too well how that story goes. RIM has worked out a way to securely separate personal content from the work stuff, including email, Facebook, Twitter, and other apps. A newly-updated BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.3 update means that when you leave your job, the IT department only has to wipe the work side of your handset, keeping all the personal data on there.

RIM hasn't confirmed if BlackBerry OS 7 will be available as an update to older models, or if it's only going to be seen on the Bold 9900 and 9930 for now, but I'm sure we'll be hearing—and seeing—more of this update soon enough. [RIM]

UPDATE: Apparently OS 7 won't be swinging its way onto the older handsets. Sorry everyone :(
