California thunderstorms from low-Earth orbit

Hot damn, that’s some fine electrostatic activity.

This astronaut’s-eye view of Los Angeles and San Diego was captured by ISS Flight Engineer Karen Nyberg, who last Sunday was positioned thousands of miles above the simmering California thunderstorm.

A Russian solar array can be seen creeping up the bottom of the image from out-of-frame, while lightning-illuminated clouds manage to outcompete even the city lights far below, in terms of sheer awesome beauty. Just incredible.
