USA Today on the only way to watch a high-definition film at home right now: JVC’s D-Theater format. It’s an encrypted format (to appease Hollywood) for the new digital VHS VCRs that have started coming out. Each D-Theater tape holds 50GB, and has twice the resolution of a DVD, though with that much data, you’d think the resolution would be even higher. It’s doubtful, though, that D-VHS will survive the release of HD-DVD.
