DIY Emile Berliner Gramophone Turntable

By

Reading time 1 minute

We talked about a different DIY gramophone kit a while back, but this $70 Emile Berliner Gramophone Turntable on pre-order from Very Cool Things looks a bit easier (and a bit nicer) to use. The idea is simple: take a CD (or any other etchable plastic surface), add a plastic cup to focus the sound, and scratch your own lo-fi audio.

I’m pretty sure this is the same kit that was buzzing around the net before my Gizmodo days, but I can’t see that we’ve talked about it before, so I’m covering our bases. It would be an excellent way to teach kids about a technology that they’ll never ever use (unless civilization crumbles and we have to go back to hand-cranking our metal anthems). (Thanks, Edwin!)
