Screw those X10 cameras—this is the real way to go. Jon Curwen has set up a little security/monitoring device in his back yard with a few cheap tools. He uses an iSight camera being powered and run by an old—technicolor G3 iBook old—Apple computer.

The camera is placed inside a weatherproof housing with a FireWire cable running from inside the house to the designated iBook. Using ImageCaster software, the Mac uploads one screenshot per minute to Jon’s .mac site to satisfy his paranoia and allow monitoring anywhere with Internet access.
