NTT DoCoMo has released the NEC 900iG, a dual-mode FOMA W-CDMA 3G and standard GSM phone. Not means not only will the phone be able to take advantage of all the high-speed infrastructure in Japan, but will be able to roam throughout the rest of the world with relative compatibility. Engadget said it might be heading stateside, which would be just fine—its 1.2-megapixel camera would be welcome, at the very least—but it seems like an odd choice, expect for those that do a lot of roaming back into W-CDMA markets. Maybe Cingular (or whoever deploys W-CDMA first here next year) will pick it up. For now, it’s released for our Japanese friends.
